Final Speaking Test Guidelines Spring 2017

Speaking Practice Midterm Examination will test the student’s ability to express their thoughts and ideas in spoken English language.  The speaking exam will cover Units 3-4 of Summit 2 textbook.  Students will also be tested on the grading criteria of their choice including rhythm & intonation, the ability to support the answer with relevant examples and facts, fluency, and the ability to ask follow-up questions.

Your group can choose any topic of choice to discuss as a group or you can choose to discuss the results of the mini research that you conducted for your blog writing.  If you’re choosing a new topic, choose a topic that is debatable and currently in the news or something that is of interest to your group. Despite the group discussion, students will be graded individually.

Students will be graded on the following criteria: 5 points each

·         Rhythm, Intonation & Stress—Usage of correct rhythm, stress of words, and intonation to aid in understanding of the speech.

·         Follow-up Questions—Ability to focus on others to ask appropriate follow-up questions relevant to the topic being discussed.

·         Fluency-- Spoken smoothly and with ease; flowing speech that doesn’t hinder understanding from too many pauses.

·         Support/detail/reason-- Answers are supported with sufficient reasons and details to support the answer.

In addition, let’s have a small talk at the beginning of your exam so that I can learn more about you.  This will also measure your ability to have a natural flow of conversation which is required in speaking. This is worth 2 points, totaling 22 points for your final speaking exam. 

Please make sure you exchange necessary contact information with everyone in your group and show up to the final exam together as a group. It is not satisfactory for you to come alone and not know where your group members are as I can’t conduct the examination without your group. Being late or not showing up to your scheduled examination will result in your failing the class.  Lastly, please come at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled exam time and wait in the hallway quietly. Once you see the prior group leaving, just come in the classroom.

For 5% of your assignment grade, students will write one main post chosen from a list of discussion topics and at least four minor posts to comment on other students’ comments. Your main post should contain your position or ideas that are supported by facts, evidence, support, or explanation on how you arrived at your conclusion. Feel free to be truthful and honest while being respectful to others who may disagree with your opinions. 

You should if at all possible to try to site your sources so feel free to copy web addresses and other sources for your information.

Please write your name in hangul and indicate your student ID number next to your name to receive full credit for this assignment.

1. Where do you get the majority of your news? Why? What is the bias of the reporting from that news? Who owns the news broadcasting company and does the broadcasting company’s bias toward news match the political position of the owner(s)?  What is the political position of the news broadcasting company you watch or listen to?  Watch one piece of news from multiple sources and answer the following questions: Were the news reporting all the same? What were the differences?  Which information was the same? What did you conclude from the multiple sources of the same news? Why?

2. Many international especially the American news flows through one medium; what is it?  What is their political position?  How are their news reporting of someone from the same political party?  Was it fair or biased? If so, how?  How are their news reporting of the opposing political positons? Was it fair or biased?  Find one particular news source and answer the following questions: Was the news evidence based or emotional based? Did it contain all the facts or was it speculation?

3. Listen to a podcast of the following persons and choose to write about any of the topics discussed on the show. Mark Levin, The Ben Shapiro Show, Rush Limbaugh.  Find a topic they discuss in the podcast and find the same news in the mainstream media such as CNN and FOX news in the U.S. Were there any information omitted? Where? Why do you think so?  What is the political position of the CNN news? FOX news?  What kind of conclusion can you draw from what you have observed?

4. Watch Tucker Carlson show and he discusses many hotly debated topics such as the immigration policies of the U.S., the threat of freedom of speech on college campuses, transgenderism, North Korean nuclear threat, and so on.  What is the position of Tucker Carlson? Was his reasoning logical? Why or why not? Did he give good evidence to support his claims?  How did his guests do on defending their position?  Would you like to be a guest on the Tucker Carlson show? Why or why not?

5. Watch CNN news and FOX news on President Trump.  Are there any differences? If so, what are they?  Is there a running theme you can notice from either of these broadcasting agencies about President Trump? For example, are they all negative or positive and are the reasons justified with evidence? Is the news you see in Korea about President Trump reflective of the CNN or FOX news?  Why do you think so?

6. In the recent news about United Air incident involving an Asian man being dragged out of the seat of the air plane, what information was told by the Korean news? Compare and contrast that with the news told by the American news. Did everyone report the same news? Why or why not? Which information was added or omitted. Was this an act of racism by United Air? Why do you think so?  What is racism? Provide evidence of racism. 

7. Do a small experiment on multiple internet search engines including the world's largest search engine; google. Who owns google.com? What are his/her beliefs?  Who did they recently vote for in the presidential elections? Does that have any impact on the search results?  Search for the same topic of interest on all the search engines and share your results here.  What did you observe that was striking? How the does search results match that of the owner's of the search engine?

8. Who owns www.facebook.com? What are his/her beliefs? Who did he/she vote for in the recent presidential elections? Facebook is trying to filter news being fed into the newsfeed.  What options are they looking to implement to sort out true news from fake news?  Do you see any areas of trouble of implementing such filtering device for what is "real news"?  Who ultimately controls the information that we're given?  After finding this out, would you continue to use facebook? For which functions or reasons would you continue to use facebook?

***Speaking Midterm Grading Criteria***

Speaking Practice Midterm Examination will test the student’s ability to express their thoughts and ideas in spoken English language. The speaking exam will cover Units 1-2 of Summit 1 & Summit 2 textbook. The midterm will be conducted in groups of (2-4 students) may choose from the two options: group discussion or interview style questions. Students will be graded individually despite the group examination. 

1. In the group discussion, students will be tested on the following grading criteria: rhythm & intonation, the ability to support the answer with relevant examples and facts, fluency, and the ability to ask follow-up questions.  You can choose the topic of your choice or something related to Unit 1-2.  Asking proper follow-up questions while someone is talking is crucial for the success of this examination. Students should NOT take turns talking as this does not mimic a natural speech or discussion.

2. In the interview style questions, students will randomly answer 2-4 questions related to Units 1-2. The answers will also be graded on the following criterion: accuracy of the answer, the ability to support answers with relevant examples and facts, stress, rhythm & intonation, and fluency.  Each student in the group will get to answer different questions.

Students will be graded on the following criteria: 5 points each

·         Follow-up Questions—Ability to focus on others to ask appropriate follow-up questions.

·         Fluency-- Spoken smoothly and with ease: flowing speech that doesn’t hinder understanding

In addition, small talk at the beginning of the session will measure your ability to have a naturally flowing conversation with the instructor.  During this time, feel free to share about how you’re doing and to ask questions. This will be worth 2 points. Total midterm exam score will be 22 points.

Your speaking midterm is worth 15% of your final grade so please come prepared. I can tell when zero preparation has been done for the examination.

Lastly, come at least 10 minutes before your group’s scheduled time. If I’m running late, please be patient and wait for the prior group to finish and then just come into the classroom once you see the previous group leaving. This would help to save time by eliminating the need for me to get the next groups outside. PLEASE BE QUIET OUT IN THE HALL WAY WHILE YOU’RE WAITING!  It’s difficult to hear students speaking when it’s noisy out in the hallway. In addition, I do not want other professors yelling at you all so please use your best judgment and speak quietly.

How do I check my participation checks? What do I do if I'm late to class?















PARTICIPATION
Remember it is your responsibility to make sure you check each day for participation check.  You can only get ONE participation check PER DAY for the following:

• Raising your hand and speaking in front of the WHOLE class.
• Answering a question I asked.
• Reading for the entire class.

In addition to the above one check per day, you can receive an additional participation check or checks for the following:

• Answering a bonus question.
• Being a part of a winning team.

Just remember, each student is capable of receiving ONE participation check each day. You should strive to get one participation check each day as this is a speaking class.  Challenge yourselves to speak each and every class.

ATTENDANCE
 I will take attendance at the beginning of class and should you come late after that, it is your responsibility to come put "L" for late and get rid of the "X" that is by you name for absence.  Do not erase anything on the attendance sheet or change the attendance sheet of another date in the past.

The CD ROM homework is worth 10% of your final grade. Please attach the Report Sheet on E-class before the due date for each unit. All sections are optional except for the Grammar & Vocabulary section but you must receive a score of 100% for you to receive a full score of 10/10.  If any score falls below 100%, you will only receive a score of 5/10.

Remember, late homework will not be accepted!

***Speaking Final Exam Grading Criteria***

Speaking Practice Final Examination will be test your knowledge of the subject matter covered in Units 8-10 in Summit 2 textbook. Students can form their own groups for the exam and each student will be graded individually.  Your speech will be graded on FIVE of the following criteria depending on the choice of the exam:

·       Clarification  Questions – Wh-questions to clarify meaning for the speaker.  (5 points)

·       Stress, Rhythm & Intonation - usage of correct rhythm, stress, and intonation. (5 points)

·       Fluency - smooth and flowing speech without long pauses. (5 points)

·       Comprehension - clear understanding of the conversation and therefore answer correctly. (5 points)

·       Support and details - sufficient reasons and details to support the answer. (5 points)

·       Creativity – Students preparation & effort used to make a fun exam. (5 points)

·        Organization – Use of transitions and organized thought expression. (5 points)

1. Your group can choose a topic related to Units 8-10, however if your group would rather discuss another topic, please come see me.  You and your group must be engaged in discussion on the topic to show that you fully understand the topic. You will need to be engaged in a conversation for minimum of 3-5 minutes and ask follow up questions. The discussion should NOT be scripted but rather engaging and stimulating, and answering questions the observer might have regarding your topic.  Wh-questions such as who, when, where, what, why, would be good follow-up questions to use during the conversation.

2. Dialogue. This can be done in groups of two or three students with a dialogue prepared in advance using 7 grammar and 7 vocabulary words from Units 8-10. I do not want you to memorize the script because it will sound scripted and unnatural which will cause you to lose points in fluency however you may bring in a copy of your script to look at it from time to time should you get lost. Please bring in a copy of the script with the grammar and vocabularies highlighted or underlined for me. You will also be graded on the correct usage of both grammar and vocabulary.

3. Use your creativity! Bring a game to play with me. You and your group will come prepared with a game to play.  Interaction should be natural with correct intonation.  

4. One-on-one exam question. You will be asked an open-ended question, similar to the discussion questions found in your textbook. You will have a minute to organize your thoughts and answer the question with defense. You might want to use transition words like, first, second, last to organize your thoughts. You will be graded on your ability to defend your position as well as fluency, and organization.*This will vary from class to class and will be permitted if time permits.

5. Video. You can make a video.  Please come see me for more details.  You will be graded similarly to a dialogue.  You must upload the video on Youtube.com and send me the link of your video via e-mail.

6. Interview style questioning where series of questions related to the topics covered in Units 8-10 will be asked. You can interview each other or you can ask me to interview you. You will need to answer intelligibly and with proper support (defense).

 

Remember, your Final Examination is worth 15% of your final grade so please prepare in advance and practice, practice, practice!

Finding the English Error Assignment

It looks as if the South Korean government is trying to clean up the English translation errors around town in preparation for the Winter Olympics. Please read the Korea Times article at the link below to get more information.

This is a fun assignment (worth 5% of the total grade) in which you and your partner (consisting of two students) will look for English errors around town.  For the purposes of this task assigned by the South Korean government, each group will be responsible for submitting four public and three private signs with mistakes written in English. Public signs can include any signs from parks, museum, airports, streets, public transportation, or any other signs the South Korean government is responsible for.  You can gather the three private signs before the midterm speaking where each group will present their signs to the class. Each student must speak in order to be graded for the speaking exam.

**The four public signs are due to the Seoul government by October 4th.**

"The city government will start taking details of errors from Sept. 21 to Oct. 4. Reports can be made by email ( pss@ktime.com or ghdekadud@gmail.com or  visitseoul1@seoul.go.kr ) with a picture of the sign and details of its location." (Korea Times)

• Total of seven signs with English errors (4 public & 3 private)
• Must explain where the picture was taken (the more specific the better)
• What's wrong with the grammar? (is it spelling, grammar, etc.)

Then, you must submit the error to one of the South Korean government at the e-mail addresses above.  To show proof of submittance, you must capture the sent screen from your e-mail so that the time, date, attachment, and to whom you sent the e-mail can be visible to receive credit. If you do not include this in the midterm presentation, you will lose 30% of your grade.

In the body of the e-mail, introduce yourself as a Gachon University student  and briefly explain that you're taking an English class with me, Chiun Kim.  Remember to present yourself well as you'll be representing Gachon University.  Prepare and design your pictures in a nicely formatted Power Point presentation using proper English in your e-mail.  If you'd like for me to take a look at it before sending it away, please feel free to make an appointment with me.  I won't be able to check them during class as I have back to back classes.  

The deadline to submit to the South Korean government is October 4th so please do not miss this deadline. Failure to miss this deadline will result in 30% reduction of your grade.

Finally, once this is submitted, you will present the errors you found to the class for your Speaking Midterm.  DO NOT PLAGIRIZE OR COPY FROM THE INTERNET. IF YOU'RE SUSPECTED OF PLAGIRIZING, YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THIS ASSIGNMNT & SPEAKING MIDTERM. 

Speaking midterm grading criteria will be posted at a later date. Your presentation cannot be read or memorized.

Seoul wants foreigners to track down mistakes on signs

The original Korean sign means “Meeting point in Cheong Wa Dae (the Blue House),” in Korean, but it has been wrongly translated into English as  a “Staring point for Cheong Wa Dae.” / Korea Times file

Seoul City is seeking the help of its residents -- Koreans and foreigners -- to note errors in street signs written in foreign languages.

Signs in English, Chinese and Japanese in public places such as subway stations, bus stops, tourist information centers and historic sites are the target.

The city government will start taking details of errors from Sept. 21 to Oct. 4. Reports can be made by email ( pss@ktime.com or ghdekadud@gmail.com or  visitseoul1@seoul.go.kr ) with a picture of the sign and details of its location.

Seoul City will review errors with experts to determine the signs to be corrected. Anyone confused about the names of Korea’s traditional or popular places, streets and so forth, should go to http://dictionary.seoul.go.kr , Seoul’s official reference website.

People who collect the most notable errors will receive gift vouchers and souvenirs.

Seoul City will also deploy an inspection team, comprised of 80 students here from English-speaking countries, China and Japan, to improve tourism services for foreigners and to find errors on street signs.

“Multilingual signs are important standards to assess a country’s competitiveness in the tourism business,” a Seoul City official said. “We want to make sure that foreigners in Seoul suffer no inconvenience.”
