***First Writing Assignment***

For your first writing assignment, you can choose any topic that is of interest to you.  Or you can choose something related to Units 6-7 if you need some guidance. You can write about anything related to travel such as travel hassles, how not to become a victim of theft or even racism encountered while traveling.

Remember to make sure your introduction appeals to the reader by including a hook sentence, question, or fact.  Also, you should include a brief background of the subject.  Don’t assume the reader knows anything when you write. And lastly, don’t forget to clearly state your thesis statement; the focus of your paper.

Your three body paragraphs should support your thesis statement. This would count as the "meat" of the paper and will be worth 90% of the grade, including your introduction.  The general mechanics of writing will count as 10% of the grade.

Use font sizes between 10-12.  Do not italicize, bold, underline, or color your texts.  Indent each paragraph.  Refer to the writing technique sheet handed out in class.  Review the feedback you received from your classmates and make necessary changes.  Do not overly use “I” in your paper as it’s a turn-off to the reader. And do not use single or double quotation marks for emphasis as this is an incorrect use of quotation marks.

There’s no page limit to this writing assignment but you should at least try to write a page. It’s really difficult to defend your thesis in less than a page.

If you need help, you can receive free tutoring service at the Global Zone. You can sign up for 20 minute increments.  It's completely free! Or feel free to make an appointment to see me during office hours.

****What to do for participation checks and coming to class late****

Remember it is your responsibility to make sure you check each day for participation check.  You can only get participation checks for the following:
  • raising your hand and speaking in front of the WHOLE class.
  • answering a question I asked.
  • Reading for the class.
In addition to the above one checks each day, you can also get additional participation checks for the following:
  • answering a bonus question.
  • being a part of a winning team
Just remember, each student is capable of receiving a participation check each day. You should strive to get one participation check each day as this is a speaking class.  If you're sitting in class and NOT SPEAKING, then I can't help you. lol

ATTENDANCE:
I will take attendance at the beginning of class and should you come in late after that, it is your responsibility to come put "L" for late and get rid of the "X" that is by you name for absence.

  • = here,     X = absent,     L = late

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me during class!  Let's have some fun this semester!!!
