***Second Writing--Post Here***

Welcome Summer 2015 D4 Class,

For your second writing assignment, it should be posted digitally on the blog.  You must post one main post and a minimum of four mini posts on the blog for your peers to comment.  It can be about anything related to Units 8-10.  The purpose of writing is to give each student the freedom to express his/her ideas and thoughts in a safer environment, which hopefully will give us the opportunity to learn from each other.

The main post should be a paragraph and should contain some of your own thoughts about a subject, which may even include some facts you have researched about the subject.  Your main post should have a position and should seek other’s opinion about your subject.  It is each student’s responsibility to maintain their own main post as other students comment on them.  If you neglect your main post, it will die, so you want to make sure to comment periodically to what other students have commented.

The four mini posts should be a response to another student’s post.  Support your ideas with facts and logical reasoning as to why you think the way you do instead of assuming the audience understands.  You may post more than four mini posts. Remember, you don’t necessarily have to have the answers or solutions to the post, but rather, can help to add to the question or help clarify the main post.  Just let your ideas flourish and see where it takes you.

Remember to be respectful even if the contents of the post are different from the opinions of our own. Also, remember to write your name on each comment to receive proper credit.

The writing assignment will be graded on the following:

  • Completion of all five posts—did the student complete 1 main post and 4 mini posts?
  • Content—Were the comments well thought out with reason and logic? Do they add to the post rather than to take away from the main post?

Good luck!  I’m looking forward to reading all of your responses!

  1. Chilpo Generation is a new term in Korea referring to a generation that gives up courtship, marriage, childbirth, housing, human relationship, employment, and dream. Many of the young generation have given up those seven things because of social pressures and economic problems. From the research 33% of responders said reason for giving up is because it is hard to achieve in current society, 29% saying getting a job is harder as it gets and lastly 15% replied it feels easy if they give up. They said cause of Chilpo Generation is social structure, policies ignoring younger generation, and wealthless household economical status. But here I see some problems with how our generation think. I know circumstance is desperate but why can’t we do something better than just blaming society and making excuses. What I see when I hear all those excuses is that we are imprisoning ourselves. Everyone’s so competitive that we have to do things regardless of what I want and if somebody else does for their “SPEC” you chase them as if you have to be that person like studying TOEIC, certificate, idea contest, volunteer and so on. Instead of completing those tasks one by one and generalizing ourselves isn’t it better to specialize what can brighten you the most? This can be somewhat sensitive issue to all of us and I would like to hear many pros and cons.

    1. I couldn't agree with you more. Maybe we can complain about the situation we are in and criticize the government for its wrong policies. But the primary thing we should do is to do everything to overcome the difficulty that we are facing. Changing the society can't be done by complaining about the problems that it's having.

      Delete
    2. I disagree with you because if the government did their job well, some specs may not be neccesary. Think about why do we need spec. Some of the specs can be needed for but is the toeic score really necessary for math teacher ? What I think is that it isn't. As there are few job opportunities and many people want to get a job, companies make more evaluation items that don't uesd in their work. If there were plenty job opportunities, such evauation items wouldn't be needed. Then who can make the company to increase the job opportunities. The government. So I think the society should be changed

    3. I disagree with you. As You said why are we chasing those "spec" things- grade, certificates, etc-? It is for to live a better living condition. We are pursuing what we called reason for to live. We want to achieve as much as possible while we are living, to make a money well, to achieve our ultimate goal. To accomplish these hopes, We must compete. However our social structure is too competitive. There is so less chance and so much compete. So it is very difficult to have those 7 things- courtship, marriage, childbirth, housing, human relationship, employment, and dream-. Those things are primary needs. "Chilpo" does not mean literally giving up 7 things but mean It is impossible to imagine to have those 7 things for us.

    4. Government is responsible for job opportunities some what but no matter how well they do their job, they can't increase dramatically and it's going to stay as it is more or less. I want to ask what is our task in this abnormal structure. Just engage in competition and try to stay on top of the food chain? I can't quite understand how chasing spec makes your life better. Not everyone has to go work in company, not everyone has to study for public worker, teacher, or doctor, none of us has to do what our society expects us to do.

    5. Hi, it’s mica. I want to ask you. Who do you think is making "Chilpo Generation"? I know you point out the attitude of twenties. But no one has the right to tell them how they are. This problem can't see simply as a matter of individual or a group. This society is connected to one another. It's good to see this problem with a wider perspective. You think people don't try and focus on what can brighten them with making some excuses or shifting the blame on to other things. But as you know from many statistics, Korea society is "OVER-SPEC". "OVER-SPEC standardization phenomenon" has become a serious social problem already. Such people, the responders from the research you mentioned, is trying to do things what can brighten them. So it's appropriate to blame on them in the age of Chilpo.

Hi it’s BPH. I know what you are saying about, finding out what we truly want to do no matter how it’s hard to be hired for a big company. But I think this is so ideal answer that is very difficult to be applied in the real life. We young generation is already well aware of the problems of employment structure and the fear for losing our dreams. And to overcome this, we should show the government of the power of our generation, by voting. But the underlying cause of this social phenomena, chil po generation, has some force majeure areas that is hard to overcome by one person. To solve this unchanged social problem, the government's role is the most important.

    8. I am totally agree on your idea. I read a interesting article about trends that literature majors which is not that popular are getting higher attention. This is because there are a few people who know not popluar language. To put simply, there are tons of people who can speak Spanish, but there are a few people who can speak Russian. In this way, people who can speak Russian would find job more easily due to low supply of human resources. By reading that articel, I thought that there is no answer of the world and I decided to find what I want to do.

  2. Mandatory Volunteering is Not a Good Idea
When I was attending high school, every student had to do volunteer work for twenty hours or more per year. If not, they were slightly disadvantaged in their university entrance. Upon this opportunity, some students were able to engage in meaningful tasks and learn new lessons that cannot be taught in school. However, since many students were sensitive to small points when it comes to university entrance evaluation, most students were only interested in fulfilling the least mandatory hours-twenty hours- and searched for the easiest volunteering. Some students went to the government and public offices, for example, distinct village offices, the Supreme Court, and sometimes post offices and the subway for volunteering. The work they did are very simple; rearranging the documents, cleaning the place, helping people, and so on. Even some students made their parents fill their volunteering hours. From all of these examples, we can find that real meaning of volunteering has become fainted. I assert that the system of mandatory volunteering at school must be changed.
many teenagers don't feel mandatory volunteering is worth spending the time to study. These days, young boys and girls have a lot of things to do even when they do not participate in volunteering. I have an experience of having to give up studying because of volunteering. We might easily think that loosing time to study of students for just one day is not a big problem, but it is very stressful to break the routine and do something that one does not want. Futhermore they can't feel the mandatory activity have true value. They don't have the time to do acts without authenticity many times. One volunteer work when they are able to do with true sympathy is even better several meaningless works. Important thing is not how many times students do voluntary works, but how worthy their activities are.
In sum, forcing students to volunteer is not a nice way to educate them. Unless they find the genuine worth of volunteering, it is no use doing it compulsorily. Voluntary service should be given free. Students should not regard it as grade points or a graduation requirement. This wrong system can lead students to fail in building the right recognition of voluntary works. There may be a lot of good aspects in mandatory volunteering, but I am sure that there are more negative side effects. In view of these reasons above, I insist that mandatory volunteering should be abolished and allow let the students who really want to do it engage in voluntary works.

    1. This has been issue for a long time. While I agree with you on some level, the problem is not the mandatory volunteer work itself. The educational environment that makes students perceive those hours only as extra points for their grades is. I strongly believe that Korean public education emphasizes too much on so-called 'main subjects', which are mathematics, english, korean and social science(or just science). With a little bit of change in a way it is encouraged(maybe we can make students write how they felt about it in 3~5 pages, which also doesn't sound like a good idea...), mandatory volunteering can give students some time to think about their moral values and other people in Korean society.

I agree with your opinion that voluntary service should be given free because forcing students to volunteer can't mean a spontaneous attitude. However, there are not many people who volunteer for some organization and give their time and efforts. I think that's why students have to do volunteering. If our society has a desirable social environment, we don't need to force our students to volunteer certain hours per year.

      Delete
    3. I feel the same way about mandatory volunteering. Problem is that those students volunteered just to fill up their mandatory time continues to do the same thing when they go to university. For them volunteer is just a good way to get benefits for their future. But on the other hand, there are still people being favored from those mandatory volunteer so I think it is better to keep the system.

      Delete
    4. Volunteering work should be literally done by the people who spontaneously want to do the work. When the work is done by force it ruins the true meaning of volunteering and also it can’t be done properly. There should be other ways to do the volunteering work other than just forcing students to do the volunteering. I know tha korean students usually don't have time and put effort to voulunteer as they have to study, but sometihing has to be done for this.

    6. Hi, it’s mica. I think mandatory volunteering is necessary. When we think about it from a different angle, it gives an opportunity to experience helping others spending our time. Offering this opportunity is very important. Helping others needs some education and training. And school is not a place to offer only knowledge. It's not good to think of education as studying mathematics, science or foreign language. In this issue, the real problem is the school. It has to explain to students fully why the school runs the volunteering program and the school also has to make a high-quality program which students can experience and feel more.

  3. Karl Popper claims in his book 'Open Society and Its Enemies', that Scrates and Plato's totalitarian ideology is not known well enough to people because of their followers and they were the enemies of democracy. It is true that they hated democracy's political system and populism. The ideal country (especially Plato) that they had in mind was composed of three ranks, ruled by philosophers and soldiers. Plato also expressed hatred for the sophists' agitation against the nation and how much he wanted to remove them from the society after the death of Socrates. In our point of view, what Karl Popper said can sound logical. But this is only because it's not viewed in sense of that time. At the time, ancient Greek citizens mostly responded to the policies that sounded great and ideal. They were never educated enough to tell what was realistic and beneficial for themselves or for the nation. Also, ancient Greece was going through Peloponnesian War. Socrates claimed that at time of war, efficiency of the nation(or police state in this matter) was supposed to be top priority. Sparta was able to achieve that because the nation was based on militarism. And this proved to be true with the defeat of Athens and its allies. Plato’s hatred Sophists’ anti-nation instigation can be interpreted in same way. And even with his loathing toward democracy, Socrates accepted his death sentence as it was the system of the society that he lived in. So I think what Karl Popper’s idea that Socrates and Plato were the enemies of democracy is a little bit radical and one-sided.
E.H. Carr said that history is “an unending dialogue between the past and the present”. These days, people seem to evaluate people in the past only with the standard of the times they live in. I believe that those so-called controversial people had their own reasons. Before making any rash judgements, those who evaluates should try and listen to the other side.

    1. Edmund Burke who is known as the father of conservatism wrote Reflections on the Revolution in France criticizing French citizens after looking French Revolution before his eyes. Victims of revolution were not only nobles, they were everyone who are against them. Under the name of justice they killed, raped, tortured, looted and ended up as another regression and fear which seemed to be the right thing to do at that time. We all are imperfect and implausible and from my point of view, we need to always be vigilant on the radical judgments under certain faith.

    2. I hate all kind of totalitarian theory because this ignores the idea of individualism. People tend to be in group because they feel secured by joining that group. This tendency is could be found in school very easy. Also, you can find a person who become very bravely when he or she is be with their friends. In this way, I hate any mass media contents that show patriotism. I watched a korean movie called '연평해전' and harshly criticized it. That movie prey to public to cry because it is a hear-broken story for Korean. I know that those patriotic propaganda is affective to public but those ideas would press diffrent opinion about the battel with North Korea.

  5. Many scientists make a strong case against global warming being real. At the same time some governments and some scientists argue there is no clear evidence that human are causing recent changes in climate and weather. They often look towards the same evidence as those in favor of proving its existence, but draw different conclusions. They also look at some evidence not considered in other arguments. These scientists hold to a strict definition of global warming as being defined as a rise in atmospheric temperature, they do not consider the atmospheric precursors as valid evidence. It is not enough historical data available. They present evidence they say proves that the Earth is going through a normal heating and cooling cycle, as it has done throughout its history. So, we should continue to drive, fly, and live normally. There is no consensus about global warming being real among scientists. Advocates also point towards the fact that a recent gathering of 31,000 scientists in the field of environmental science couldn’t reach a consensus on whether or not global warming is real. They believe that they don’t have long term historical climate data or the data they have isn’t clear. There was no significant and prolonged temperature changes Since 1997. Scientists who argue against global warming say global warming isn’t real because since the 90s there hasn’t been a significant temperature change. The upswing in the temperature started from 1975, continued till 1997 and the temperature has been flat since then which clearly states that there isn’t any significant change in temperature in last 17 years. To reach educated opinion, it is important to think about the people who make scientific claims and what their purposes may be. Scientific information can be affected by the interests of individual scientists. When we hear reports on climate change, we must use good judgement and ask ourselves where the facts are coming from. We must interpret the research, make informed decisions, and most importantly, continue to actively participate in the debate.

    1. If your conclusion is that people should be careful when it comes to having an opinion toward controversial issues, the example you gave seems a bit inappropriate. People who claims that global warming is real do have their own reasons and data. I am no expert of this matter so I don't know the details. But saying that those who believe in global warming are not making well-informed arguments sounds a little prejudiced.

    2. Your writing was really fresh to me. But I can't agree at the point where said we should continue to drive, fly and live normally. No matter what cause the global warming, I think it is good that people are mindful of our environment more than ever. We still are responsible for what we've done such as ozone depletion or ecocide because eventually we are the victim of ruined nature. Anyway I'm curious how the result would come out.

    3. As i wrote, 31000 scientist couldn't reached on consensus. Because the global warming is so huge that they could not find out humans are causing recent changes in climate. Even they could not prove link between carbon dioxide(CO2) and weather change. What if the reason why they are arguing is that the scientists who warn about global warming are trying to scary people in order to get attention and money for their research? As you said there is a reason either. I wrote my post from the other side of view based on scientific facts. That's why i wrote about why we must use good judgement. And we no longer call it "global warming". It's "Climate change". Thanks 준상.
You know what the depletion of the ozone layer
Is recovered hopefully. I meant that we don't have to overact to protect the environment. We are so worrying about it that we restrict our daily life and conveniences. That's not necessary.

    4. As you know the earth is so wide that we might not find significant change of tempertaure in last 17 years but it's clear that the earth is getting warmer and warmer. The news that I found says that there is 0.5'c temperature increase in recent 5 year and before 1000 years ago, the temperature then was hot either but lower than recent temperature. So what I think is that global warming is real and we should take care about it because it's the human being who changed the earth dramatically, we should take the price for that.

I enjoyed your posting and I agree with you. Also, I want to focus on other point, not a global warming. Your point that people shoud use good judgement and ask ourselves where the facts are coming from is impress me. It is of course not only that global warming issue, but also all kinds of controversial issues. there are always pros and cons and also there are always advantages and disvantages on every issues. If there is someone who supports a policy, there is also someone who doesn't want to support that policy. This is because of their interest of individual. Therefore, person should have right data, reasons and judgement on every issues.

As i wrote on the post, many scientists insist that the Earth is just going though a normal as cooling and heating cycle. It can be found in long term historical climate data from a glacier. There was an ice and a thaw(warm age). The scientists said that we are on a thaw. So it's nature that the atmosphere is getting more warm.

< The relationship between smart-phone and personal relationship >

There are some pros and cons about the fact that smart-phone makes people closer and make their personal relationship strongly. People who agree with this opinion is because nowadays, people can easily connect to the Internet and communicate with others and even strangers easily through their phones.
However, when it comes to me, I want to say smart-phone prevents people gathering outside. For example, in my case, I have never done SNS such as facebook or twitter because I want to make relationship with friends who can talk with face-to-face. I really want to communicate at the same time in the same place. I totally prefer to sit in front of my friends, eat delicious meals together, talk with a cup of a coffee and listen carefully what they think and say. But in the unreal world, I can't believe their expressions and can't sure whether they truly miss me or not because I can't see their faces and hear their voices. Therefore, I think having relationship through the smart-phone prevents someone's bonding strongly. Of course it is advantage that people having conversation through their phone on their way to school or at home. But it is also dangerous because if someone can talk with each other using their phone, they couldn't realize they should meet directly. In conclusion, I think smart-phone has a lot of advantages, but it doesn't give a good effect to personal relationship. People have to figure out that if there is no one who can drink a beer with me when I finish my hard work, it is a really dry and tough life.

Hi Juanna, it's BPH. Your writing really explained well about a problem that many people are facing now. There’s no denying that the smart phone made our life easier and more convenient, but there’re also a lot of side effects. Like everyone is sitting in the same place but doing different things, contacting different people by their phones. And I think it seems really ridiculous and dumb. So, when it comes to the real meeting, people should focus on their dialogue partner more than their cyber friends from the smart phones.

The reason why we can not talk face-to-face is that we have no time to meet up our friends. One day is 24 hour, we are so busy that we can not deal with our daily routine work. I think thank to this developed technology, we don not lost our relationships. It is only way to communicate with love one.

  7. Recently when I turn the television what I usually see is the cooking program. No matter it is public television or cable, cook-bang, the cooking program, become trend. Before cook-bang there was muk-bang, the program that watch a person or people eat food. Then why the muk-bang and cook-bang has become trend. Commonly we might think that this trend shows not only people have enough time and money but also the taste has become very abundant. But it doesn’t’ mean that way. Rather than that the culture has encroached the most primary sense of person, the appetite. The quality of life hasn’t been gotten better. People usually don’t cook when they watch cook-bang instead of cooking, they just order food. We can find this by the rising number of ordering application. As we live in such a busy life we don’t have time to cook or buying stuff for that, we watch cook-bang to get vicarious satisfaction. In conclusion the trend of cook-bang and muk-band is based on us to fill our lack of our life by watching delicious food

That's why we can't do the same cooking as the way chefs cook. It's hard to do the same. Also, it's hard to obtain ingredients which they use. But recent cook-bang programs use ingredients we can buy to hand. And they give useful recipes to people who live alone or housewives. So we can easily imitate chef's cooking.

They are talking about the food's recipe, give another tips to each other and even share their food to neighboor. I have been working at cafe, and I could hear their talking. That's why I'm sure cook-bang is helpful for our families. Furthermore, according to big mart such as E-mart or Lotte mart, once the cook-bang is broadcasted on TV, that day, the customer is increased and they tend to buy ingredients which is introduced on program. 9. The Korean Senior Citizens Association has recently proposed the government to increase the minimum age of "elderly people" entitled to a state pension and free public transport to 70 from 65 now. The group said, “The retirement age has been put off and the average life span has become longer. By delaying the time to qualify for welfare benefits, we hope the savings will help lessen government’s expenses.” But I think it’s not desirable. They don’t consider those who have fallen into the dead zone of welfare. Figures released by the OECD, show that Korea’s poverty ratio of senior citizens is 49.6% and over 30% of senior citizens suffer severe poverty. Also Korea ranks top in elderly suicide rate. In this situation, it’s not good to increase the minimum age of elderly people. It’s not desirable to decide welfare recipient on the basis of age. And the job which employs elderly is lack and it even cuts wages. So instead of increasing the minimum age of elderly people, it’s better to collect tax revenues in other ways and set a solid foundation for elderly people’s welfare.

    1. I agree with you. Korean elderly are vulnerable. According to Korean the Department of Health and Human Service's research, the elderly's main source of money is their money that they have earned when they were young. Even worth is that 75.8% their asset is property, their house. It means the only thing they have Is just their home. They need more support. If senior citizens rely on pension or government's support, the young people need to pay more tax. I'm worrying about that though.

In this situation, if the minimum age of elderly people goes up, there will be many poor senior because it will be hard to get a job or keep their status of working. Therefore, we need some solution to give them welfare. All of us will become old, so it's our problem, not just their problem. Goverment should make a way to get more taxes than now and they show their honesty of using that taxes.

Hi Mica, it’s BPH. I've read your writing very interestingly. First of all, I agree with you. Because there are no measures to improve the vulnerability of this system yet. I support the movement of our government to change the structure that has much problem, but this reform also have a lot of shortcomings so I think this system cannot be implemented until it improve working conditions for the old and senior welfare programs.

Greek crisis that captured the global attention

Many would say that the hottest news throughout the world is the Greek default crisis. Leaders of the Euro zone from nineteen different European countries took more than 20 hours to agree on providing the third bailout to Greece on condition of Greece will implement the additional reform bills which are about adopting a retrenchment policy, gathering up more taxes and selling state property. Although they’ve wrapped up the first phase of the negotiations, the Greek crisis threw a lot of implications to the European Union (EU) and the world financial markets. It revealed the fundamental limitation of Euro zone which has only pursued monetary union without any systematic policies.

In Korea, the press says that the default is caused by the excessive welfare policy of Greece. It is dangerous, however, to interpret this crisis in accordance with an ideological standards which are highly linked with the political interests. Finding out a reason of the Greek crisis is not as simple as the Korean Press has said. Rather, various problems are intertwined complicatedly. But generally, many experts view this situation as the problem of budget deficits at the national level, weakened competitiveness due to the transfer to the single currency, peculiar industrial structure, weakening of export competitiveness due to the strong euro phenomena, corruption, welfare populism, poor reform and optimism of the citizens.

First of all, you can easily find out that the Greece has a deformed structure because the manufacturing industry only accounts for 5.7% of all industry rates and the hospitality industry represents 90%. The next is the problem of single currency, euro. When the deficits occur, the value of the currency go down so that the deficits would be lowered naturally. But the single currency can’t do that. The most fundamental and serious problem is the issue of wide-spread corruption. Even though the Greek politicians had adopted a welfare scheme at the Nordic level, their ability to maintain and develop it was not sufficient. This is because the corruption of public officials. Politicians and bureaucratic hierarchy had been maintained their positions by swapping the policy for votes to the unions and the regional groups, so called clientelism. This grew an underground industry where tax evasion is rampant. The underground economy in Greece, before the crisis of the Euro zone, exceeded 25% of GDP.

Something important to notice here is that the laziness and the greed of the Greek people did not affect the default crisis. According to a survey about the average annual working time of OECD countries, Greece ranked the 2nd country followed by Korea. Another statistics conducted by Eurostat(European Union statistics office) shows the GDP welfare expenditure in 2010. The average of total EU countries is 29.4% and Greece is 29.1%, showing that the public welfare of Greek is not actually incredibly large. In contrast, Greece ranked 69th out of all countries in the category of the private-sector corruption index conducted by Transparency International.

These preceding facts explain everything about the complex causes of this default. Nevertheless, many still focused on the excessive welfare policy. But such attitudes do not help anything to prepare and resolve the situation that Greek has been experienced and the whole world may experience. Consequently, people should look for the root cause of this crisis not in excessive welfare policy. It's in the welfare policy only for the upper layer, the corruption and the incompetence of the government who has been ignored its own problems. So, it’s important for the Greek citizens to unite their power to combat fraud and corruption of the upper layer.

  15. People tend to fine one specific job and try to devote themselves to it. As 상원 said, we are all chilpo generation and try to make 'SPEC' to demonstrate they job ability. But some people say that they became a idiot after they find their job. This is because they prepare and look for only one caree. Getting several jobs as many as possible through whole life is a way of finding the right job for life. Searching the last job which is the most beneficial. In this global world, there are many tons of kinds of jobs and it is no secret that finding having the most suitable career is very difficult. a harsh affair. So, there are also lots of people who satisfied with thier own business and are wasting their time and effort in doing something they don’t want to do. I am certain bet that their life is not joyful because they do not like their work. of the lack of affection on their work. For example, my best friend, Tom is a famous TV home shopping show host in Korea. which selling some items on TV. He had the job thanks to the experience of working as a being part time salesman in a supermarket. Had it not been for that part time job, he would have not been able to become a star TV show host.
