South Korea face the complex diplomacy 이승모(Seung Mo Lee), 201233885 South Korea face with the complex diplomacy Recently, South Korea had an election and got new government. The new government did a lot of work in short time, (it changed only two weeks ago). Domestic policies are visible, but foreign policy is not. So, we often get that information from the news. I looked at the foreign policy related with "THAAD(Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile)" and how each Media say about that.
*ROK-US policy : We all agree that North Korea is the biggest threat to both of country. they are trying to make nuclear weapon and ICBM(Intercontinental Ballistic Missle), and it can be Threaten not only South Korea, but also US because ROK and US are alliance. So US want to install THAAD to protect ROK, the alliance. It's for both country's safty, but president Trump said that Korea should pay 1billion dollar for THAAD so it makes some noise -ROK should pay for THAAD : http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20170428000807
*ROK-China policy China government strongly disagree with THAAD because they think the THAAD system infringes upon China's security. If THAAD system change the mode from supervisory mode, which is for North Korea only(600 km radar), to Forward mode, it could see over 2500 km so it could monitor China's territory. But ROK decided to install the THAAD system, and they do economic revenge to us, for example, force chinese people not to buy korean stuff, and not to visit for vacation. Recently Chinese government expect new korean goverment so they loosen their retalitation. -loosen their economic retalitation : http://sbscnbc.sbs.co.kr/read.jsp?pmArticleId=10000859808
Both US and China have a stubborn opinion and Korea has a hard time being stuck with two big country. In my oppinion, I also agree to install THAAD system because Our security needs to be top priority. It didn't mean that we neglect what China said and done. In fact, We can't, because we are strongly related with China. So I think we should convince them. China also agree that North Korea's behavior is danger so they warn them not to do some provocation. And this is why the new Korean government have a big homework to solve these complex diplomacy.

good point. i also agree with that we should have THAAD even Chinese government strongly oppose because we dont have technology to make our own "THAAD" and as you said our sacurity should be top priority
I heard that THAAD protect US from North korea's ICBM. although THAAD's X-BAND radar helps our military information detecting system , i agree with that we have THAAD only when US pay all cost
I also agree with that we have to instrall THAAD, and I just want to talk about there are no countries can handle our situation. So we have to play a leading role. We must insist our stance regardless of China's insistence.
I also agree that we should install THAAD. China had been putting pressure on Korea to not install THADD but Our security is most important thing. So We must install it in spite of China's opposition
I do agree that installing THAAD is crucial for out ROK-US alliance, but I have a different view on the question of 'Do we need THAAD?'. I don't think we need THAAD actually,, I think it is for the sake of US, to watch China. And, the environmental impact assessment of THAAD is not over yet, which means it is not sure if it is safe yet. So we have to pay close attention to Installing THAAD.
조인혁 201234365 North Korea launched a ballistic missile test in May29 from Wonsan, its third in less than three weeks. The short-range ballistic missile traveled an estimated 248 miles, splashing down within Japan's exclusive economic zone, an area of sea where commercial ships are known to operate, according to statements from both the Japanese government and the South Korean military. Right after ballistic missile launched Korean President Moon-jae-in summoned the National Security Council to discuss the launch and how Korean government should react. It is third missile test after Korean president have changed to Moon-jae-in. And it seems North Korea want to show their power to new South Korea government. According to Chosun.com, North Korea tried to show their will to develop the missile. Also Chosun mention that it seems to the North Korea`s provoking about international pressure on North Korea from U.S and others. To the different with Chosun.com, CNN more focus on reaction of Japanese government and US. And they showed their worries by mentioning “all of North Korea's tests, successful or not, provide information that help bring it closer to its goal of building a missile that could reach the US”
I think for CNN,from Americans perspective, they think it is important other neighboring countries's thinks. Because they have alliance with not only korea, but also japan.
North Korea will never try anything stupid, launching their rocket is Kim Jong Uns' way of saying, "hey am still here!" Just let the kid have fun with himself. South Korea on the other hand is on the right tracks, though there are challenges of unemployment and some corruption here and there, South Korea is in the league of the best countries on earth. Given enough time, the fat kid from the north will realize just how stupid he has been wasting N. Koreas precious time instead of catching on with the world.
A South Korean military court has given an army captain(media call him captain"A") a suspended 6 months prison sentence for having sex with another male soldier. Captain A will dishonorably discharged. Captain A collapsed and was taken to hospital after the verdict. Besides, the army chief of staff general Jang jun-kyu had asked for homosexuals within the armed forces to be tracked down. The military had then carried out an investigation and some 40-50 soldiers were put in a list. Homosexuality is not a crime or a sin but the South Korea's military law bans homosexual activity by army personnel. It's obviously unjust conviction. No one should be persecuted based on their sexual orientation, activity or gender identity. What matters is their service, not their sexuality. This unjust conviction should be immediately overturned. At the same time, Taiwan paving the way for same sex marriage to be legalised. As a South Korean, I feel ashamed of this issue. and we all should be ashamed and feel responsible for promotion of minorities' right(especially sexual minorities in the case).

i think suspending captain A with only reason he is homsexual is too much. however, Korea army should find them and manage them. at first , Korea army is special group who is still at war. they handle dangerous weapon that could kill someone . and they are responsible for national security. so they should manage their own to be strict.
In fact, the Korean army is very conservative. If you are a Korean soldier, you must follow the law of the military. But I think it is very harsh to make such a punishment for the homosexuality that is happening in the military. The Korean army tends to control all of the privacy of the individual. This is an unacceptable reality for adult men in the 21st century, and I think that this will cause very serious side effects. I think we should change our perceptions with clear laws in this area. I also think that the privacy and public life of an individual should be very clearly distinguished.
Any government that targets a section of its citizenry for presumed crimes that lack legal backing of the constitution of that country is committing a crime and needs to be called out. Homosexuality is neither legal nor illegal in Korea and the government should in the interest of its own mandate as a government, and basic civil rights of Koreans prosecute any army officers that were involved in the harassment of their junior ranking counterparts. The president should call out the people who victimized the army captain and apologize to him and Koreans in general.
여주미 Julie 201331164 I also think that we should protect one's privacy. Korea has a strong prejudice about sexual minorities. In the perspective of religion, sexual minorities who love same sex is not acceptable and it is regarded as a sin. However, i also respect individual's right and freedom. We should think about this kind of problem beyond this military case.
Homosexuality is normal and people shouldn’t blame it. But military is special place. When the army captain commands, others can not refuse it. I think South Korea's military law that bans homosexual activity by army personnel has to be existed.
이연진 201334371 New South Korean President Moon Jae-in has cast doubt on a landmark deal with Japan over wartime sex slaves.
He emphasized "the two sides should work together based on understanding of the emotions and reality of the people," according to a statement from the presidential office. The issue of so-called "comfort women" has caused rifts between the two countries for decades. An agreement signed by the governments of South Korea and Tokyo in 2015 was intended to settle the matter, but victims' groups objected to it and the issue remains highly controversial. Japan had sought reassurance from Seoul about the agreement following Moon's swearing in as President Wednesday. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment. By reading about comfort women's article I want an apology from Japan for them either. And I wish the problem to be settled soon.
We just want Japan's true apology, not just money. But they just pay some money. In my opinion, Japan government should announce regret by government name.
i heard that most of victims reject money, but previous government got moeny forcibly(through negociation without victims's opinion). I want to Japan's true apology to international society.
The Japanese government should apologize sincerely to victims of sexual slavery in Korea. Japan has to think about why Korea is always asking Japan to apologize. The Japanese government says they apologized, but they teach their students a distorted history and say sexual slavery was voluntary prostitution. There is no authenticity in their apology, and the agreement that Park Geun-hye has made is opposed by the majority of the people, so the Moon Jae-in government must negotiate with Japan again. And the Japanese government must apologize sincerely.
여주미 201331164 It has been several years since Korea requested apologies, however, it has not been solved yet. Japan has to admit their historical fault and compensate to Korea and also to the victims with formal apology. Money is not the solution for this problems.
I also agree that Japanese government should apologize sincerely. They apologized and pray Shrine worship. This shows that the apologize is just a fake.
President Moon with his new administration has been pushing forward with its appointing of ministers of various departments.
He began recruiting experts of many different areas under the stance that anyone who has been found guilty of any one of "the Five Major Practices of Corruption" would be excluded, but the nomination of the prime minister position caused some friction.
The candidate is not blameless at all in that he has been found to have engaged in four of "the Five Major Practices of Corruption" in the past, and even though Moon considers him to be a person of great ability, no one can deny that he is someone with a record of corruption.
The approval of the National Assembly has already passed with the approval rate of 72.4% through the four-party integration, and the candidate has already become the Prime Minister.
However, the party members who opposed the ratification tried to get the appeal of the people that the president did not keep his word.
Chosun Daily ran an ariticle regarding this that shows a negative response to his approval as Prime Minister despite his ethical breaches including fake residential addresses.
I heard that the opposition party member who graduated our university was disqualitified because she agreed the candidate. I think parties have to have cooperation.
I really think that this is a dangerous move for President Moon. This whole new government is built on the needs for better and fair country. That's why we impeached the former president. This could set a bad precedence for his tenure as president.
I still don't understand why the liberty korea party opposes to the selection of prime minister. I think it is an blanket opposition. They would oppose to other candidates too in any terms.
박재현 201333751 Government-designated textbook was abolished by the Ministery of Education
On May 12, The new South Korea president Moon ordered abolition of Goverment-designated textbook. After that, the Ministry of Education has officially abolished the history textbook of state affairs on March 31. Since former President Park Geun-hye has ordered Ministry of Education to "develop a balanced history textbook.", It has passed three years and three months.
The Ministry of Education has announced that it has completed the procedure to abolish the national history textbook by publishing a revised notice on the revision of the textbook publication system of middle and high school Korean history textbook. The 'History Education Normalization Promotion Group', which is a department of the state textbooks, was dismantled. The Ministry of Education has shut down the homepage of 'the correct history textbook' that was opened to promote the national history textbook.
The history textbooks of the government, which had been subject to a lot of controversy since its implementation, have disappeared into history.
JTBC reported that President Moon Jae-in, who was elected newly, was quick to fulfill his pledge. http://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=sec&sid1=100&oid=437&aid=0000154087
On the other hand, TV Chosun reported on the negative side that it might be pointed out that if Democracy Party gives the guidlines for new tested textbooks, they might again call for political intervention. http://news.tvchosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2017/05/24/2017052490151.html
The reason why so many people were against 'Government-designated textbook' was that there should not be any political intervention in teaching history. It's great that new government took it down but it is still possible for history distortion in this new licence system. Therefore, people should keep an eye for these publishers and their textbooks.
Writing history has always been tricky, objective presentation of factual accounts for the future generations is vital and should not be subject to political influence.
여주미 Julie 201331164 Textbook is the most important source for students when learning about the history so i also think that we should tell them the only truth without any government's intervention. Government-designated textbook should be replaced by revised one for our future generations.
Textbooks should be made transparent without any interference because students without any knowledge about something learn from textbooks. So I support Monn's fulfillment.
권경수 201132197 On April 9, a man was dragged out of the United Airline plane. He was forced to give up his seat so that other airline employees could take the seat. Airport officers pulled him out of his seat as he refused to depart the airplane. He injured his face during the incident. Lots of people accused this as discrimination because he was Asian. It went viral especially in China because at first, he was identified as Chinese (He is Vietnamese). Both Korean and American news emphasized his ethnicity and showed worldwide reactions of people who considered this as racism.
Personally, I don’t think this United Airline disaster was an act of racism. Because he was just one of four who were picked by computer program randomly. I doubt that they used ethnicity as a factor for the program. And people started to realize that when the details about the incident were revealed. People just wanted to focus on the racial part so it could be controversial or sensational. In my opinion, it’s just matter of poor client managing system, lack of staff training and huge PR failure. But I think all these outraged reactions showed Asian people’s feeling about racism that they’re neglected and not considered seriously compared to Black people.
Three days ago, Uruguay played a ceremony in the U-20 tournament, which seemed to haunt Asians. It is not a coincidence that racial discrimination is happening in public and the passengers who are brought in are Asian, but I think that even if I am conscious of this, racial discrimination should be severely punished.
I have seen an incident about Racism. Even United Airline have stated that they picked the victim randomly, it is not a coincidence that they were chosen. Three of all passengers were picked because they are Asians. And it was clearly revealed that the guards of United Airline pulled him off like animal. In my opinion, it is undeniable that they look down on Asians in unconscious no matter how they say they are not as if we see down on East-South Asians.
I do not think this incident is related to racism. I just think it is a coincidence that the victim in this case is Asian. There were rumors that all passengers who were asked to get off the plane were Asian, but it turned out to be untrue. But the airline's apology or the violent behavior they did on the plane was enough to raise suspicions of racism. They should be careful not to have this happening through education. And personally, American airlines need to make efforts to improve the quality of their services.
These days, there are lots incident that prove, people are looking with some kinds of prejudice. For example, while interviewing with the professor of Pusan university, his kids came in and the woman who came after was his wife, however, some people regard that she is a housekeeper. I think the incident of united airline has also relation with racism. The main problem is that the company's system itself. However, i think we cannot call racism because the victim is Asian. However, pulling him off with compulsory action is the problem and that was the issue that make people think racism. In short, if they didn't pull him off like that, i think it wouldn't be a big issue and people might not mention about racism.
I think this incident is act of racism. If he were white, i doubt they could pulled off the white and got and bled profusely from his mouth. And United Airlines is notorious for numerous racial, religious and sexual discrimination before.
1)President Moon Jae-in ordered the 'temporary shutdown' of aged coal-fired power plants over 30 years as emergency measures to reduce fine dust. The government will temporarily shut down eight of 10 coal - fired power plants over 30 years in June for a month. The remaining 2 units were power plants in Yeosu, and were excluded from shutdown due to high electricity demand and high alternative power supply and demand.
From next year, we plan to regularly shut down old-age power plants during the period from March to June, with high dust concentrations and low electricity demand. The decision to decide whether to include Jeonnam Yeosu 2 will be decided next year.
President Moon is planning to shut down 10 of the old power plants in turn during the presidential term, and to close the deadline as soon as possible. In addition, it plans to review the completion of the 9 power plants with less than 10% of the total construction thermal power plants. ---------------------------------
2)The power industry is unhappy that a coal-fired power plant is piling up like a "culprit" of fine dust. As President Moon Jae-in said last month to reduce coal-fired power generation as part of measures to reduce dust, the government stopped operation of eight old coal-fired power plants that were more than 30 years old since the beginning of this month. Suspend for one month (shutdown). Three of these will be completely closed this year.
"A lot of fine dust is spring, and this is when the amount of power plant operation is the lowest in a year," an official of the power generation industry said. "In contrast, the amount of fine dust is the smallest in the summer when the power plant is fully operated due to the large amount of electricity used," the ministry said. ---------------------------------
3) According to a study commissioned by the Ministry of Environment, the proportion of pollutants from China in the ultra-fine dust (PM2.5) covering the Seoul metropolitan area skyrockets to an average of 44% per year, especially in spring. So far, it has been known that the proportion of pollutants in China from domestic fine dust (PM10) is 30 ~ 50% per year. However, this is the first time that the proportion of Chinese factors in ultrafine dusts, which are more dangerous to the human body, has been specifically analyzed
-The government announced that it would temporarily suspend operation of the old thermal power plant to reduce fine dust. But thermal power plant experts do not claim that thermal power plants have a major impact on environmental pollution. Rather, a new study found that 30-50% of the sources of fine dust in Korea are China. I agree with this study, and without China's cooperation, we can not improve the environment. We are suffering from desert dust and various polluted dust coming from China due to the effect of westerlies every year. Our government must first ask China for responsibility and draw up cooperation.
Air pollution is the problem that has to be solved inside and outside of Korea. There are many complicated sources for this dust. We can't just pick power plants or China and tell them this is all their fault. It seems like that everyone is blaming others for responsibility than actually finding a solution.
I agree with Kwon Kyung-su's opinion that there is not a clear plan. But I think he claims government to solve the biggest cause. According to the text, air pollution is the worst in spring. That shows China is the cause of it. However, because diplomacy is a sensitive issue, government have to focus on coal-fired power plants first.
여주미 (Julie) 201331164 After the election of president Trump, many of the campaign promises has been controversial among the world. The most shocking news is the protectionism which trump insisted to renegotiate or withdraw unfair free trade with other countries. America was the member of TPP and NAFTA agreement and it had been supported by a former president, Obama. However, Trump affirmed that those kinds of free trade agreement is hurting American economy because the trade deficit is growing against trade partners. Furthermore, job losses increased after the FTA. President Trump focused on these problems and declared protectionism. In terms of the president Trump’s protectionism, The Economist argued that America was being harmed by poor trade deal with other countries so Mr. president is insisting renegotiate for the America economy. However, according to The Economist, they think imposing tariff on any company that shift any job offshore would actually not only hurts America consumer but it will also devastate America business in which supply chains are incredibly complicated and goods are made in lots of different part of the world. They said that it is a very self-defeating approach and it will end up leaving American poorer. However, in case of CNN, they are just reporting the facts about the Trump’s promises without any subjective opinions. According to Korea news, SBS, KBS or MBC, they are looking this protectionism problem in terms of Korea position. Since Korea is the country that mostly relies on trade, so they reported that trade is one of the most essential parts in Korea economy. Thus, protectionism is not a good policy for Korea economy.
I do not support Trump's promises because i believe globalization has more benefit to Korea. Globalization has been developed and it enables the world grow faster by trading. Every country has their own comparative advantage and by trading, those advantages create the value beyond other countries. In case of Korea, we do export some techniques such as semiconductor, smartphones, and electronic devices because Korea has comparative advantages on techniques. Korea has been developed by trading those kinds of products with other countries. If president Trump impose lots of tariffs or introduced quota, it will lead bad effects in korea economy because we are the second highest country that depends on foreign trade in G20. Therefore, I support globalization for the sake of Korea economy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources : The Economist :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHrpHNlalso CNN : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K5BOHzGjNQ SBS : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91g4gFNXfw4
Trump got to power by telling people what they wanted to hear, not what they needed to hear, as such don't expect much from his presidency. The FTA is gonna be alright, America is sensible enough to not walk out. They might try to renegotiate the initial agreement, but there must be a reason why Americans agreed to put their signature in it in the first place, and they wouldn't just walk way from that.
To give a background of protectionism, I'd like to share what I learned about it. After Trump is elected president of United States, The U.S economy has also taken a new strategy against New-Normal. Such as reshoring of manufacturing, stopping the quantitative easing. Therefore, interest rates got higher, which makes Exports unfavorable, So the answer was to control trade by protectionism and to control the exchange rate by monitoring list, a currency watch list.
Recent decision by the United States of America to pull out of the Paris global climate pact has America at odds with its’ ingrown media cynicism and distrust. Most of it stemming from the current administrations’ newly proclaimed "America first" mantra which has seen a lot of opposition from people who see Trumps increasingly inward looking policies as uninformed and bound to hurt Americas’ influence and respectability abroad on one hand, and on the other hand support from people tired of the 'establishment' as they like to call it; people who believe that huge corporations in Wall street and corrupt politicians fighting to keep status quo at the expense of middle class Americans, and supported by a lying press, are the enemies; and that its time to weed them out. For Trump though, a president who was elected on a platform of taking Washington back and bringing jobs back from abroad, he carries the weight of responsibility on his neck. And his success as a president will largely be judged, inevitably through the eyes of the same media he discredits of distortion, inaccuracy and bias, a problem acknowledged by many observers in and out of the US. And which make it very difficult for the average American citizen to obtain an open, objective view of many of the issues being reported in the media. A free press is crucial for a good democracy, but if not truly free, paves way for manipulation of opinions, thus undermining the success of democracy. As you would expect, different media houses have reported the recent news on Paris withdrawal in a predictably partisan manner, The more liberal New York Times, CNN, The Guardian, Washington Post, The Daily Show. NPR Buzzfeed and others owned by liberal Mexican Billionaire Carlos Slim, Scotts Trust, Jonah Peretti and other liberal media tycoons have leaned more with the liberal view of anti-Trump reporting. On the other hand you have media houses aligned to the likes of Steven Bannon, formerly of right-wing Breitbart News website, Rupert Murdochs’ Fox News and others giving Trump administration a reporting that’s generally more positive in their coverage of his administration. This bias in the media has in essence been counterproductive in the governance of not just America but the rest of the world as well, with American politics trapped between partisan identities, the world so badly needs another superpower to pick the bat on from America moving forward and save the world from the looming leadership predicament.
I agree! I think we should have open views on president Trump. In Korea media, he is seen in a negative light only. But, nevertheless, he also has done something good. I think his 'reshoring' policy is good for revivng the manufacturing economy.
It's been a month since we took the presidential election. What I like to discuss is about different views of media in last presidential election. Each media reports and announces the articles according to their inclination. So, unconditional acceptance is very dangerous. Especially at the time of year. The citizens' ability to accept information wisely is significantly needed. So, I analyzed the articles on the last presidential election.
What I compared was articles about approval ratings for the candidates of the presidential election. After president Park's impeachment, media outlets competed to report the approval ratings of the upcoming presidential election. Let's take a look at the headlines of each media reported on the same day, April 10.
'Hankyoreh' newspaper reported "In 5 parties, candidate Moon=candidate Ahn 37.7% at tie for first place, in two-three-four parties, candidate Ahn takes the lead", The headline showed that Moon failed to make a big difference with Ahn. While 'Daily Chosun' reported "In 6 parties Ahn 34%>Moon 32%, in two parties Ahn 51%>Moon 38%" to show that Ahn is ahead of Moon, and prospected that Ahn will be greatly ahead of Moon if it become competition between two parties. However, according to the public opinion agency("Media research") written in the body of the article, the error range of Ahn's rating(34.4%) and Moon's rating(32.2%) is ±2.0%p, which means there is no discernible difference within the error range. 'Daily Hankook' reported the headline "Moon 38% > Ahn 37% > Hong 7% > Sim 4% > Yu 3%" so that the subscribers can understand that Moon is in the lead. But if you look at the text of the article, Moon's actual rating was 37.7%, less than 38%, which is within the error range, not that different with Ahn's rating 37.0%. Lastly, KBS reported "In 5 parties, Ahn 37% > Moon 33%, and in two to four parties, Ahn is in the lead" to show that Ahn took the lead. However, according to the public opinion agency("Korea research") written in the body of the article, The gap between Moon and Ahn stands at 4.1 percent points, meaning there is no difference within the confidence level of ±2.2%p.
Obviously, even though it is a comparison of the articles of the same day, the views of each press media are different. The media who wants to show that Moon is in the leading position reflected the research of 6 parties' ratings. On the contrary, The media who wants to show that Ahn is in the lead reflected the research of 5 parties' ratings or they maximized the small gap between the two candidates.
The Presidential elections are over and president Moon Jae-In's term in office has passed a month. Still the conservative or progressive media releases articles favorable to their own views. We should be able to accept critically of a wide variety of media by analyzing and comparing it.
I agree with your idea. We have to develop the ability to see the article objectively. We must be alert to the survey. Statistical survey can have problems with Sampling, data collection process, configuring a question, the analysis process. Surveyors can use them to make the results they want.

A man was violently removed from a United Airlines flight by aviation police officials at Chicago’s O’Hare international airport on April 9. When the airline received support from the passengers for the next flight, the airline took four random turns, and one of them refused to get off the plane. In the process of overbooking, the passenger was even bleeding. Other passengers who saw it complained, but it was useless. The passenger was Asian. Many people around the world protested that it was racism. Both Korea and American news ponited out that this happen was wrong act and acknowledged United Airline's fault. Comapre with Korea news with America news, America news included the Right that United Airline can remove passengers from a flight if they “fail to comply with or interfere with the duties of the members of the flight crew”. I think this happen was an act of rasicm. I looked for the information about United Airlines, and I found some problems with them. The United Airline is notorious for his numerous racial, religious and sexual discrimination. There were some controversy over a United Airline. In October 2013, Their crews boarded the Internet and posted video clips of Asiana Airlines with laugh, who caused a landing problem at the San Francisco International Airport. Also In 2015 The Muslim woman requested for drinks but they rejected the request by saying that the United Airlines crew could use a can of drinks as a weapon. And this Overbooking incident occurred to me that they were racist, not just by chance. If he were white, i doubt they could pulled off the white and got and bled profusely from his mouth.
Five months ago, there was an disputation in Korea. It is the issue that Independent counsel investigation filed a warrant for arrest to Lee Jae Yong, Samsung’s leader. This was a big issue because Samsung accounted for a large part of our economy. Samsung's sales account for 19% of gdp in Korea, despite that overseas sales are much larger than domestic sales. This shows a big difference when compared to other countries. This ratio is two to three times that of Australia and Spain, where GDP is similar to that of Korea. The article title of MK news is "impeachment ... afraid of doing business in South Korea. " This gives a nuance that Lee Jae-Yong is arrested to redeem for corporate pressure, not because of sin. Although the article includes both the opinion of Independent counsel investigation and the opinion of Samsung, it emphasizes the economic shock that comes when Samsung's leader is restrained by presenting opinions of the Korea Employers’ Federation.
Hankyoreh news article titled "Independent counsel investigation judged that Lee Jae-yong gave 43.3 billion won to President Park as compensation for succession." As the title shows, Hankyoreh focused on the judgment and reason of the special prosecutor. There are opinions from Samsung, but only 20%. There is no concern about future predictions when he arrested.
The headline of DongA news article is "Independent counsel investigation, Warrant Lee Jae-Yong ... Samsung can't understand. " In the article, it shows that DongA is trying to maintain neutrality by presenting all opinions of Independent counsel investigation, Samsung, Korea Employers' Federation, and the legal circles. DongA news cites the Korea Employers Federation said it was a bribe due to political enforcement. But MK news suggested Korean Employers Federation’s concerns about economy.
Even if newspapers handle the same case, the title, content, and quotation are different according to their tendency. In fact, I hated newspapers with a conservative tendency, such as MK news, because I have antipathy toward the former regime. However, if you see only one opinion, your sight becomes narrow and you can not make a fair judgment. To make your opinion even stronger, You have to look at all the progressive, neutral, and conservative news.
South Korea face the complex diplomacy

South Korea face with the complex diplomacy
Recently, South Korea had an election and got new government.
It's for both country's safty, but president Trump said that Korea should pay 1billion dollar for THAAD so it makes some noise
-ROK should pay for THAAD : http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20170428000807
*ROK-China policy
China government strongly disagree with THAAD because they think the THAAD system infringes upon China's security.
And this is why the new Korean government have a big homework to solve these complex diplomacy.

good point. i also agree with that we should have THAAD even Chinese government strongly oppose

DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI also agree with we should install THAAD.
DeleteOur economy is related with China deeply, but our security is more important than the economy.
I also agree that THAAD is installed. but, I think we have to consider the position of China.
DeleteChina is the 2nd in G20.
I also agree with that we have to instrall THAAD, and I just want to talk about there are no countries can handle our situation. So we have to play a leading role. We must insist our stance regardless of China's insistence.
DeleteI also agree that we should install THAAD. China had been putting pressure on Korea to not install THADD but Our security is most important thing. So We must install it in spite of China's opposition
Delete이명우 201333032 Kevin
DeleteI do agree that installing THAAD is crucial for out ROK-US alliance, but I have a different view on the question of 'Do we need THAAD?'. I don't think we need THAAD actually,, I think it is for the sake of US, to watch China. And, the environmental impact assessment of THAAD is not over yet, which means it is not sure if it is safe yet. So we have to pay close attention to Installing THAAD.

ReplyDeleteNorth Korea launched a ballistic missile test in May29 from Wonsan, its third in less than three weeks.

DeleteNorth Korea will never try anything stupid, launching their rocket is Kim Jong Uns' way of saying, "hey am still here!" Just let the kid have fun with himself.
DeleteA South Korean military court has given an army captain(media call him captain"A") a suspended 6 months prison sentence for having sex with another male soldier. Captain A will dishonorably discharged.
ReplyDeleteCaptain A collapsed and was taken to hospital after the verdict.

Deleteat first , Korea army is special group who is still at war. they handle dangerous weapon that could kill someone . and they are responsible for national security.
so they should manage their own to be strict.
DeleteAny government that targets a section of its citizenry for presumed crimes that lack legal backing of the constitution of that country is committing a crime and needs to be called out.
Delete여주미 Julie 201331164
DeleteI also think that we should protect one's privacy. Korea has a strong prejudice about sexual minorities. In the perspective of religion, sexual minorities who love same sex is not acceptable and it is regarded as a sin. However, i also respect individual's right and freedom. We should think about this kind of problem beyond this military case.
전영서 201331086
DeleteHomosexuality is normal and people shouldn’t blame it. But military is special place. When the army captain commands, others can not refuse it. I think South Korea's military law that bans homosexual activity by army personnel has to be existed.

ReplyDeleteNew South Korean President Moon Jae-in has cast doubt on a landmark deal with Japan over wartime sex slaves.
And I wish the problem to be settled soon.
i think japanese government should pay to victims monetary or mentaly
DeleteWe just want Japan's true apology, not just money.
DeleteBut they just pay some money.
In my opinion, Japan government should announce regret by government name.
i heard that most of victims reject money, but previous government got moeny forcibly(through negociation without victims's opinion). I want to Japan's true apology to international society.
DeleteThe Japanese government should apologize sincerely to victims of sexual slavery in Korea.
Delete여주미 201331164
DeleteIt has been several years since Korea requested apologies, however, it has not been solved yet.
Japan has to admit their historical fault and compensate to Korea and also to the victims with formal apology.
Money is not the solution for this problems.
Japan should apologize to victims for a real apology. They need a sincere apology instead of a superficial apology for avoiding historical stigma.

A COMPETENT PRIME MINISTER WITH A CRIME RECORD?
ReplyDeletePresident Moon with his new administration has been pushing forward with its appointing of ministers of various departments.
Chosun Daily ran an ariticle regarding this that shows a negative response to his approval as Prime Minister despite his ethical breaches including fake residential addresses.
http://m.chosun.com/svc/article.html?sname=news&contid=2017052600324&Dep0=news.naver.com

ReplyDeleteGovernment-designated textbook was abolished by the Ministery of Education
I don't want Government-designated textbook. Because It can limits our sight of history.
Deleteand i praise Moon's quick fulfillment
The reason why so many people were against 'Government-designated textbook' was that there should not be any political intervention in teaching history. It's great that new government took it down but it is still possible for history distortion in this new licence system.
DeleteTherefore, people should keep an eye for these publishers and their textbooks.
Writing history has always been tricky, objective presentation of factual accounts for the future generations is vital and should not be subject to political influence.
Delete여주미 Julie 201331164
DeleteTextbook is the most important source for students when learning about the history so i also think that we should tell them the only truth without any government's intervention. Government-designated textbook should be replaced by revised one for our future generations.
Textbooks should be made transparent without any interference because students without any knowledge about something learn from textbooks. So I support Monn's fulfillment.

ReplyDeleteOn April 9, a man was dragged out of the United Airline plane. He was forced to give up his seat so that other airline employees
could take the seat. Airport officers pulled him out of his seat as he refused to depart the airplane. He injured his face during
the incident. Lots of people accused this as discrimination because he was Asian. It went viral especially in China because at first,
he was identified as Chinese (He is Vietnamese).
Both Korean and American news emphasized his ethnicity and showed worldwide reactions of people who considered this as racism.
DongA:

CNN:
http://edition.cnn.com/2017/04/11/asia/united-passenger-dragged-off-china-reaction/index.html
Personally, I don’t think this United Airline disaster was an act of racism. Because he was just one of four who were picked
by computer program randomly. I doubt that they used ethnicity as a factor for the program. And people started to realize that
when the details about the incident were revealed. People just wanted to focus on the racial part so it could be controversial
or sensational. In my opinion, it’s just matter of poor client managing system, lack of staff training and huge PR failure.
But I think all these outraged reactions showed Asian people’s feeling about racism that they’re neglected and not considered
seriously compared to Black people.
DeleteI have seen an incident about Racism.
DeleteI do not think this incident is related to racism.
Delete여주미 Julie 201331164
DeleteThese days, there are lots incident that prove, people are looking with some kinds of prejudice.
Delete1)President Moon Jae-in ordered the 'temporary shutdown' of aged coal-fired power plants over 30 years as emergency measures to reduce fine dust.
ReplyDeleteThe government will temporarily shut down eight of 10 coal - fired power plants over 30 years in June for a month.

ReplyDeleteAfter the election of president Trump, many of the campaign promises has been controversial among the world.

DeleteTo give a background of protectionism, I'd like to share what I learned about it.
DeleteAfter Trump is elected president of United States, The U.S economy has also taken a new strategy against New-Normal.
ReplyDeleteFor Trump though, a president who was elected on a platform of taking Washington back and bringing jobs back from abroad, he carries the weight of responsibility on his neck.

ReplyDeleteIt's been a month since we took the presidential election.

We have to develop the ability to see the article objectively.
We must be alert to the survey. Statistical survey can have problems with Sampling, data collection process, configuring a question, the analysis process.

ReplyDeleteBoth Korea and American news ponited out that this happen was wrong act and acknowledged United Airline's fault.

ReplyDeleteFive months ago, there was an disputation in Korea.

For this reason, there was opposed the ideas that he should be restrained for investigation and that he should not be arrested for the economy.
Hankyoreh news article titled "Independent counsel investigation judged that Lee Jae-yong gave 43.3 billion won to President Park as compensation for succession."
As the title shows, Hankyoreh focused on the judgment and reason of the special prosecutor.
