  2. It's just a joke! or is it?

Have you ever felt like that you have crossed the line when making a joke to somebody? I'm sure that most of you who are reading this have at least one experience of freezing the atmosphere by "crossing the line". This so called 'line' can be defined in many ways. I myself think that this line is the degree of one's endurance about jokes. It's a line that decides whether you can take a joke or not and this joke. But tell me, where is this 'line'? How do you know when to stop making jokes?
The answer is, it's impossible to know. Besides that this line I'm talking about is not literally a line, it's just that everyone have all different lines.
Every single person has different degree of taking a joke. Let me give you an example, do you remember the joke that Danny told us in the class?
It was a joke about Chinese girls who had poor accents and we laughed so hard including me. However, what if we had Chinese female student in class?
It was funny for us alright but would it have been funny for her too? It depends on her degree of taking jokes but I'm sure she wouldn't have been so happy with it or people who can't take sexual jokes might have not have laughed. This is what I'm talking about. We make joke out of races, things, people, and situations, etc.. but all people are different and in all different shoes. It's no surprise that everyone take jokes differently. Jokes that you tell can make people laugh but also can offend other people in some circumstances. People who have high degree of taking jokes would likely to say, "What's the big deal?" Why do you have to be so serious?" when they see people who have low degree of taking jokes and calls them sensitive, difficult person, but they shouldn't blame them for that. They just have to admit and accept the fact that they have different degrees. However in opposite, I also think that people who have low degree about taking jokes should be flexible in some circumstances and shouldn't freeze the atmosphere.

My limitation of jokes are not too small and I think I can take most of jokes, but I'm very sensitive about making jokes about death or accidents and criminals, occurrences like sewolho, rapes, and etc.. I also am sensitive about making fun of my body, since it's my complex and I'm not really confident with it. What about you? Do you have low or high degrees of taking jokes? What are you sensitive about?

    1. Sofia Kwak: I really enjoyed reading about your writing and you pointed out very well about the "line" of jokes. While reading your writing, the expressions we learned in class like 'be a good sport' and 'can take a joke' came to my mind. I am totally agree with your opinion that we should be considerate about a person who is the butt of a joke whether he or she can take a joke or not. I can be a good sport about most of jokes like you, but I am sensitive about jokes about my appearances or serious mistakes that I never want to make again like being failed to test. I do think purpose of making jokes is to make people happy and give pleasure. We should not forget about this when making jokes.

    2. I really agreed on the point that you said like the different limitation of jokes that people can take or not. Also, after i read your post, i thought that there are tacit rules about jokes in the society. For example, making someone's parents as the butt of a joke or making a joke by using historial events are tacitly prohibited. In my case, I frown my face when I heard these tacitly prohibited jokes. some jokes that belittle someone's parents or some thoughtless jokes that ridicule my nationality by using the Japanese colonial period. I think we always have to be careful when we make jokes because all people have their own taste and limitation of jokes which we don't know. Also, different cultures have their specific rules about jokes based on their historical backgrounds like my example.

    3. When we communicate with others, we use jokes to break the ice. However, while joking, I also think that it is difficult to find the lines. The lines might be related to censorship or taboo. In this semester, I learned, and actually you also learned, about the perceptual screen in other class. The concept of perceptual screen seems little similar with the lines of jokes. Every person really has each line though they grow and live in same culture. It is really ironic that to know and understand other's, we need communicate and use jokes while we do.

    5. 지현 : It’s interesting! I agree with you. Humors and Jokes are very important and sometimes necessary in our life. Many people tend to favor people who have proper sense of humors. But, some jokes can be acceptable and even funny in one situation while they can be very inappropriate and offensive in another situation. Maybe we all have experienced the awkwardness that everyone is laughing except me. For example, there are many racist jokes. Although some people might find it offensive, it’s usually acceptable unless they don’t go to extreme. However, I think that sometimes racist jokes can be just the start of it. So, it can be different for different situations.

      Delete
    6. 선우(Evelyn) : It's a good chance for me to look back on myself. Sometimes, I think that I'm not that good at taking all the jokes. To me, the line depends on the relationship between me and him or her. If my friend make me the butt of a joke in us, I can take that happily because I know she did it for fun and there's no other mean intention. On the other hand, the person whom I don't really know does that, I might think about his or her intentio for a joke and sometimes got hurt at first time. I know this isn't that good. When I jump into the society, there will be repetition of these situations. So, I'm going to try to highten my line! However, like you said, there should be always an exception for racism, crimes, accidents, or the deceased. These things shouldn't be made fun of in any cases. I hope people to have healthy sense of humor.

  3. What do you think about human cloning?

Have you ever seen the movie ‘ISLAND’? This movie deals with the human cloning. The story is about clones.
They were made by each people’s DNA. That’s why they look like real people. They can also think, and feel hurt like real people. However, they are just used as a tool.
If real people need an organ to operate, then the clone is killed to supply the organ. Do you think that this is just movie? I think we will face this situation soon.
Human clone is a hot potato in the world. Some people say human cloning is important thing to improve our science, and medical technology more.
But other people who have negative view on the human cloning say it is immoral behavior and it can have bad influence on the society.
I’m also one of the people who think human cloning negatively. Of course I acknowledge the merits of it, but I think the riskiness of it is more than merits.
What do you think about it? Do you agree or disagree about human cloning?

    1. MJ(MinJi Kim): I also saw the movie. Yes, human cloning has been a hot issue in this world. As science improved farther, human could live longer than they did before, and human cloning regards as a key of this. Though it would be difficult if my family become the one who need a new organ, I believe that human cloning will bring chaos to the society. Although a cloned human made for human, they are also lives who breath, feel and think. Also, I believe that human should not attempt to control the nature, human life. Nature has their own cycle and if something disturb it, the cycle will be broken and affect back to human life negatively.

      Delete
    2. 지현 : Many religious and social organization strongly object the human cloning. They argued that ethical catastrophe would come if it is admitted. I think that thaere are pros and cons. On the positive side, careful research and strong restriction against illegal use of cloning would make positive result for human. Making human clone might involve lots of new knowledge about human being and its generation, and from the making process, scientists can learn human being and understand it more. But, on the negative side, people would view human as a tool not as noble individual. Because people think that life is the thing made in a lab, they would contempt the concept of life. I am also against human cloning. Because, If there are a lot of people who are same to me, we would confuse who is the real one. People might doubt whether they are cloned or born in natural ways.

    3. I saw the movie "ISLAND" maybe a long time ago. At that time, I was little young but the movie gave me a lot of things to think.
Consequently, I disagree about human cloning for now.
Human cloning is the controversial issues these days. Even though cloning have been developed consistently.
And also human cloning has ethical problem. So I disagree with this issue.

    4. 박여경(Rachel)

I saw the movie, too. When I saw it, I was panic and confused. I never thought about human cloning before watching the movie. Nowadays many people are anticipating human cloning to cure disease or implant human organs. Recently, there are some cruel news that illegal trafficking of human organs is widespread. I think due to the high demand of human organs, a black market has formed. People said it was so diabolic and subhuman behavior. However what is the difference between it and human organs trafficking? Using human cloning just for supply healty organs is nonsense.

    5. I haven't watched this movie but it sounds scary enough only with the brief information. Well, human cloning is actually coming to our lives and I am much more worried now. There are a lot of people who are against human cloning, but there are also people who do it. I guess demand for human cloning will anyway make clones but since there are so many problems, it will be done concealedly. There should be a really strict law to regulate it.

  5. These days, in Korea, the movie 'Interstellar' is very popular. The movie starts with showing the future of the earth, which seems heading to end of all species even human. A grandfather of the main character, which could be showing our generation, says that the world become destroyed because human expanded by rapid development.

Rapid development makes human possible to access everything in the world, and all of each human wanted to have everything, too much. What do you think about this opinion? We do not know this gloomy result will be our future, however, yes, rapid development brought globalization, and it makes human easy to approach the world. Because of development, we could contact with others who lives in opposite part of the earth. We could fly to anywhere in the world. We could know what is happening over the world by internet. However, globalization makes people who are not satisfy having benefits only from their countries to achieve multi-national trades and benefits. This makes the gap between who the rich and the poor wider.

As like everything in the world, globalization also has positive sides and negative sides. What did you think about the globalization? I wanted you to have chance to think about the both sides of the globalization and share about it.

    1. 지현 : Society is being changed smaller and smaller not by physically, by mentally. One case that has sparked international attention is increased sensitivity to environmental issue on global scale in the world. Pollution has international dimension and action must be common to be effective. World has become as ‘imagined community’ in which all suffer and benefit from other’s actions. I think that today’s globalised world sheds light on the importance of expanding collective responsibility for the mitigation of inequality, of human rights, of environmental values and of feminism.

    2. as you said, globalization is double-edged sword, yes. but, nobody can stop globalization. it comes like a huge wave and it is only a matter of time. so we have to pretend the globalization and have to make a way that how we can use a globalization as a good way to human being. In future's globalized age, international community will stop the war in africa and mid-east and they will solve the world's food problem.

  6. Have you ever played Wii? Wii is a game that is played by acknowledging the motion of the player. For example, if a player moves his or her hands the same motion will be shown on the screen. Actually, many people saw this technology before the release of Wii player in the movie. In the 「Minority Report」, the main character Tom Cruise moves the windows or activates and inactivates by moving his hands not even touching the screen. In real life, this is called as the motion recognition technology and Wii player is based on this.
As you can see in this relationship, there are a lot of interrelationship between the SF movies and the real science. So, I thought about the interrelationship and the role of SF movies. Some movies are made based on the experimental technology and by showing this indirectly it can reduce the resistance towards new technology when it is released. The Wii player can be the exact example. When it released many people were surprised but they welcomed the new technology. In other words, they accepted with little resistance. Sometimes new technologies or theories are motivated by the movie such as Doctor Kip Thorne is developing new theory about wormhole because of the motivation from the movie 「Interstellar」. Also, SF movies suggest the negative effect of revolutionary science such as Islands showed the moral side of cloning.
So I think the relationship between the movies and the real science is positive mutually. What about you guys? Do you think there is any bad influence of SF movies on the science? If there is something, please discuss with me. Thank you.

    1. Sofia Kwak: I do agree with your perspective to SF movies-actual engineers and scientists can get inspired from SF movies and normal people like us able to know easily about scienitfic theories with interests by watching SF movies. Like Wii, it reminds me of the video clip that we watched in class which was about game technology tracks eye contacts and make people able to play games only with their eyes. Im little bit worried of abusing the SF technology just by mimicing it but since SF brings many inspirations and creativity, SF is surely one of the great genre of arts.

Seeing the movies star trek the old version like decades ago, I saw the machines like iPad, Google glasses.
Surprisingly, they were just like the old movies machine. That's why I found it interesting.
So, I've never thought about any bad influence of SF movies on the science.

Do you guys remember ‘GMO’ as we were talking about new technologies in our class? After the class, sharing opinions with you guys about ‘GMO’ really motivated me so I kept thinking about this topic. Before talking about ‘GMO’, I want to clarify the meaning of it. GMO is Genetically Modified Organism, and the main purpose of GMO is to make crops possess strong immune system to any interior hazards like insect or contamination. Growing organisms stronger, faster, and more abundant is the ultimate goal of developing GMO.
However, developing GMO is becoming big issue worldwide because of its both sides and many countries are worrying about it. People who sustains about GMO says it would give a lot of help to solve developed countries’ food crisis and food prices would become stable by increased amount of crops. On the other side, people who are opposing GMO believe that nobody can assure what side effects GMO would bring to humanity. Also, consumers would fear from uncertain source of ingredients if GMO prevails in markets.
GMO could bring a hope to resolve food crisis or disaster due to its side effects. Personally, I would oppose to develop GMO because once it starts using GMO crops in market, it would be mixed up with original crops and we might be eating GMO food as not knowing about it. Also, the actual GMO experiment was held by institute in France by feeding experimental rats with only GMO crops over 10 years and the result was shocking. Rats which were fed only by GMO had many kinds of cancers comparing to control group. What do you guys think about GMO? Would you support using GMO in future or oppose to it? I want to know about your opinions. : )

    1. Hailey Yeon : I agree with you Sofia. I am worried about GMOs. But people don't really know. And Korea government doesn't regulate GMOs strictly, so actually they are all around us. I think it's dangerous because we don't know the result of having GMOs yet. It's invented not long before so nobody can be sure about it(Well, those GMO companies would say it's safe anyway). I am worried:(

    2. I personally think that because humans are not perfect, anything artificial are not perfect since they are made by human. Growing crops can be done without using GMO, therefore I think they shouldn't do anything to bother the natural process. Also, like you said, if GMO starts to contribute to the food market, we won't be able to sort them out because we cannot see the difference between GMO and non-GMO. Of course it might be good in some ways like solving poverty, but I think we can't take the risks of the side effects that GMO can bring us. The media and government should let people know about the side effects about GMO.

      Delete
    3. 대근 : I think GMO is imperfect technology. Of course I acknowledge that it may be able to be a solution to help developed country’s food problem. However it’s also true that this technology have some danger. This technology is an artificial thing not natural. There’s no good things when people change natural thing into artificial thing historically. We should leave a nature to its natural course. We don’t know this GMO exactly. We don’t know what will be happened if we eat this GMO food. we should think it more seriously because this GMO is related to our health problem directly.

    4. 선우(Evelyn) : I totally agree with you. It may not seem so trustworthy reason to you guys but my mom always says that the thing that bugs cannot eat is not edible even for human. I think it make sense because we also worry about spraying too much pesticide on the field to protect the crops from the insects. How about GMO which has so strong immune system that even insects can't approach? Does it sounds good for you? Absolutely not. Actually I didn't know that our country already imported huge amount of GMO crops such as corns, soybeans and canola.According to some statistics, about eighty percent of GMO crops are used as livestock feed. But still nineteen percent of GMO crops are used as food for us. After I read this, I'm kind of worried about myself. I can not sure about the food I ate, which means those foods are not really made from GMO crops. We are already exposed to the dangers with GMO food. People have rights to know what they are eating is came from and made from, especially for GMO food.

  9. a trigger for new kind of crime : 3D printer.
to my knowledge, a very limited amount of criminal activity has occured through 3D printing. however, that's not to say that no criminal activity will arise. first, someone in internet has created a 3D design of key which unlocks handcuffs that are currently in use of dutch office. the design was released and free for anyone to 3D print. most scary thing is ,this key was created based on a photograph.
and also, it can make a gun such as rifle. unregistered firearms are dangerous, not only in korea but also in United States. the scary thing - products of 3D printer are made of plastic and metal detectors can't find these kind of firearms. therefore, it is easy to conceal the firearms made by 3D printer.
To the readers, what do you think? should we be regulating this technology, or are the current laws in place enough?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 대근 : Yes, it’s true that 3D printing can be used badly as you said. Through this technology, burglar can get a copy of key easily, and child can make a gun easily too. It may become a serious problem in our society. However it’s also true that this 3D printing can give good things to many people in need. For example, people who need an artificial leg or arm can have it cheaply. Actually it cost high now, however if this technology of the 3D printing use widely, the cost will go down. Like this, 3D printing is a double-edged sword. It can be used nicely or badly by the people who use it. There are many danger about using it, but we can’t not deny the fact that it’s useful to us.

      Delete
    2. 선우(Evelyn) : I aslo think that 3D printer has a lot of potential problems. A few months ago, I read a news article that said one japanese guy got caught for trying to use the illegally duplicated gun through 3D printer. Fortunately, the attempt didn't develop into severe crime but it actually made me feel awake about 3D print related crime. Of course, there will be bright sides with 3D printer. However, while introducing the new technology, we have to risk the side effects by letting it into our country. I'm still kind of worried and scared about 3D printer thing. Besides, I didn't know that it could also print the photograph into 3D real thing. After knowing that, it made me more think that not only the violent crime but also the intellectual crime will happen. I hope that government or the manufacturers should deal with those problems before 3D printer causes such mess to our life.

    3. Your writing me reminded of the day we talked about 3D prints in our class. And not that scary 3D-printed knife. Anyway, I think that 3D printing has a lot of problems, too. What's more scary is that it can actually make anything as long as there're materials to make. So the potential area of problems is really broad. Well, for now there are not strict laws because it's not used much yet. However, we definitely need ones soon.

      Delete
    4. I agree with you. I had no idea about 3D printer before I see the youtube video in class. However, when we saw the video of making knife, it was really scary. Technology will be developed farther, and eventually people can make it more highly sophisticated. Technology have made us really confidence, but also put as in danger. I hope every government figure out the solution and strict law before they release the 3D printer to the public.

  10. What do you think about quickly developing technology?
In my opinion, innovative technologies are beneficial to human. But, if you look at the another ways, advanced technologies are not always best to the people. Of course, some technologies like ubiquitous computing and putting the computer chip in pets would be comfortable than before.
But what I'm worried about here is the distance between human and machine. That is, human made robots will replace the humans' labor job. In some years later, robots might constantly threatened people's job like simple labor.
So, the more science and technology are developed, the less people will not do the labor job like before.
That is why scientific technologies advancing at this point in time, keeping its distance is needed to people.

    1. There are many media things that help us to imagine the future world with the robots. There are some movies considered the bad effects of robots as you said. But some movies show that the robots can be very helpful to our life. For example, the drama called as is about the police things in the future. In that drama, the cops or detectives are teamed with robots, especially the detectives are devied into groups of two and the robot partners help a lot, from analyzing the evidence at the right scence to protecting human partners from shooting or other threats. As you know, there are a lot of dangerous works that human hardly endure. So, in my opinion, robots can influence on both good and bad ways. we have to think about the limitation of using robots for our future life or generations. Because like you said, robots can threat our means of living but at the same time, they can help us by doing dangerous work instead of us.

    2. 지현 : I think that technology offers us greater opportunities to enjoy ourselves. For example, transportations have been dramatically developed. In the past, nobody would have dreamed that we could be able to go to America by air. This is all attributed to the advent of technology and its fast development. Also, these days, most people enrich their lives by surfing the Internet. Through the Internet, they can gain information with a single click of a mouse in the comfort their homes. Not only can they do shopping on the web, but they also take online courses presented by cyber universities. All things considered, I firmly feel that technology has allowed us to have a greater enjoyment of life.

    3. 대근 : I’m optimistic about quickly developing technology. Through it, we may have more opportunity that we have never thought before. You seem to be negative about it because you think robots will replace the human’s labor job, and many human lose their job. Well, it may be true but I don’t think this point seriously. Because I think another new job will be made. I mean although people will lose their job about simple labor work, they can get a new work such as controlling the robot. We need some people who fix the robot too. Likewise people will be needed in other section. In the grand scheme of things, the number of human’s job will be same or more.

    4. 선우(Evelyn) : 선우(Evelyn) : I also agree with you that robots will replace human's labor. For example, these days, we can't see station employees easily like before. When we were kids, we used to buy tickets for our destination from the employees. But, who does do that now? No one uses a ticket because technology made a new device, a transportation card that could substitute for the ticket. I don't want to blame that technology can subsitute for human's labor itself, but the problem is that there are no back up plans for the dismissed employees. I think if it work it out well, there will be more bright sides waiting for us in the future.

I always think about the problem whenever I watch the movie about robots. I found that there are some advantages when the robots replace the human's job. If something is hard enough for people to do or widow-maker, robots will be really helpful. What if the robots replace firefighter's life-risking work? How about extreme jobs like a building exterior surface cleaner? Even if we worry about rising unemployment rates, the robots will reduce industrial disaster victims. I just want to look forward to the future.

    7. As I say in Danny's, technology have supply human confidence, but also put us in danger. I think this situation is also related to the danger. We've been know that human have to live in community with communicating others. However, if we think of robots replacing big part of our life, emotion, which is one of human's singularities, would be burnt. Not even with the robot, smartphone and internet are also good example. With the development of smartphone, SNS become more popular. As then, people started focus on communication in SNS, even the moment they are with humans, friends and families.

  12. Can you imagine ‘no car’ all over the world? How about ‘without computer life’?

‘No car’ and ‘without computer life’ are probably like the 1900. If someone who live 2014 go to 1900, he would be crazy, because of uncomfortable and boring life. Now, we can’t deny that technology changes our life to comfortable and variety life. But, it changes other things we forget easily. These are environments and human. It means to say developing technology come with side effects. Let’s think the ages when a car wasn’t invented. That time we didn’t need to worry about CO2. And we moved by horse or walk. But after inventing a car, we care about ozone, sea levels and air pollutions. We’re just crazy for cars, didn’t think about side effects. Lots of rapid advance of technology, like cars, destroyed a lot of things. The first thing is environment. Rapid developed of technology destroyed nature. Nowadays all over the world concern about ‘Sustainable Development’, means that it aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations. Because we know that human can’t live without environment. And also, the second thing, rapid advance of technology sometimes makes confusing to people. For example, ‘Matrix’, the movie, showed future of human life. Too fast or too much advanced of technology has a possibility that technology is more important than human. So, when we invent something, think about side effect in advance, not how to make money. It means we always should consider human and environment, and then we try to develop technology. What do you think of this idea? I want to hear your views on that.

    1. Your writing made me think a lot about results that technology and development would bring to us. Yes, cars and computers had brought us tremendous comforts and effects and people called these inventions as 'innovation'. It all starts from industry renovation- mass production, using machines and technologies, scientific discovery, ect. However, this renovation has brought huge side effects both on human and nature. Although people realized the both sides which renovation has resulted, we still develope more effective, strong, fast technologies. I do believe even one single event has both sides- merits and side effects. No technology or development can fulfill everything so we should find the proper limit that can harm less to many parts of our society.

    2. I 100% agree with you Jihyun. I think development of technology is beneficial to human. But also, bad for the human.
Every technology has side effects. For example, So called the best invention of the year, 3D printer also has side effects.
Literally 3D printer can make object in 3D, it can also make bullet, knife, and such dangerous weapon.
Due to the video we saw in class, 3D printer can't not make knife like dangerous weapon right now, but it's just a matter of time.

I also agree with you. I think human self-interest is the basic motivation for technology development and it also cause destruction of nature. I also love computers, cars, and smart things but as you know, it is very difficult to restore nature to its former condition once it is laid waste. So we should consider our valuable environment before development of new machines or technologies. Reckless desturction of nature by human beings has brought ecological catastrophe. Continued destruction of nature will ultimately bring about self-destruction of all humanity. Don't you think so?

  13. Hi guys, I want to tell you things about rice. We talked about it in our class. But at that time, I didn’t know much information. So this time, I want to tell you why I don’t want the rice market to be opened.
If the rice is opened, many kinds of rice will be imported. Mainly from the US, there will be a lot coming. It’s dangerous because their price will be much cheaper than Korean ones even though they will have to get tax added. Some people might say it’s good for consumers. Well, if you only saw the price part, you would say so. However, we should see something else, too.
First is food sovereignty. The Food sovereignty rate of Korea is only 22.6% which is really low. Even for rice, it’s 83%. We are already so dependent on food from other countries. And when it gets to ‘rice’, which we eat every day, it’s a serious problem. When the countries who export the rice actually uses when they have to deal with conflicts, it’s dangerous for us. And it’s already happening for the cows in Korea because they are so dependent on grain from abroad. So when there were big afflation, the cow owners had difficulties getting grains for the cows.
Second is that we cannot guarantee the safety of rice. For now, imported rice has to be checked and proved that they are not GMO. But if the rice market is opened, there will be GMO ones, too. Not right now, but later. Because for Japan, the US tries to abolish the law that rice has to be checked. We cannot assure that they will not do what they do to Japan now.
These two reasons are why our rice market shouldn’t be opened. I am so worried about it and I wanted to tell you guys that it’s now just a price problem. In the short term, we will like it because we can get rice with lower price, but in the long term, there are things to be concerned more.

    2. 대근 : I also acknowledge your opinion, and what you worried about. But I think we should see this problem more widely. Actually it must be a one of sensitive problems the Korea have. It’s also true that there is a danger. However we should acknowledge that we postponed this problem for long time, and this postponement leads the Korea to import more obligatory. It damaged our economy. We do not have a justification to refuse it anymore. If we adhere to it, other country may be able to take trade retaliation to the Korea. Then there’s a high possibility that we may have a difficulty economically.

    3. I totally agree with you Hailey! I wanted to tell other students about this, but I didn't know much information that time.
I also price is not the one to think about. We need to considerate food sovereignty until the future for a long term.
If other country stop exporting the rice to our country, then that will be a chaos.
It seems a little too much, but there is a possibility even 1%, so we should think about it.

    4. Actually, i was persuaded by Danny a little bit at that time. But still, I mostly agree with your idea. Many scientists are making hypotheitcal theories about the end of the earth and they pointed out the lackage of food supply by disease and insects. Therefore, many futurologists emphasize the importance of food supply and they anticipate that the crops and other foods will gonna be the most powerful national competitiveness. Based on this, the self-sufficiency of food will gonna be the most important part to survive. In short term, I think, the FTA threatens many Korean farmers' income and in the view of long term, it threatens the agriculutre of Korea and the future generation.

Are you here now with me? (the counterattack of modern technology)

Thesedays, especially in Korea, many people have smartphones. Thanks to smartphones, we can communicate with other people much faster than before. Also, we don't need computers for small internet things. Even bank things can be done with your "smart"phones. This device really make us life convenient and entertain us. Besides these things, there'll be plenty of other advantages of smartphones. But, as there is flip side of the coin, when there is good parts, there must be bad parts. Nothing in the world can't be only good. Smartphones have also a lot of disadvantages such as electromagnetic waves things, deteriorating eyesight, lack of concentration among kid users, and so on. It's hard to name it all. Above all, smartphones made us isolated. It may sounds ironic. But, have you ever went to any restaurants or cafes after the advent of smartphones and looked around? Many people in there barely talk to each other who is in front of them and they are so busy with staring at that pretty little rectangular-shaped things. This situation goes often in younger generation who are exposed to modern technology too early. I had a similar situation with my friends a few times. For example, last time when I met some friends at cafe, she was really busy doing Kakao right in front of me. Of course, there might have been something important thing to talk about, making her friend, me feel awkward. After experiencing that a few times, I was more lonely with those friends who just cannot let go their smartphones from their hands and minds. Also, there was an article that people who uses smartphones feel awkward talk there on the phone. So, they quickly hang up the phone and do Kakao. After knowing these kinds of sad and uncomfortable truth, I thought that it might be a counterattack of modern technology for us who unconsciously and passively use the results of modern technology. Hope you to turn off at least Kakao while you meet your loving people. Don't let them be the victims of your accumulation of few seconds' Kakao or other smartphone things.

    1. I always thought smart phones are making us more lonely and isolated. It is true, like you said, that it has become easier to keep in touch or make contact with each other but because it has become so easy, we don't feel anything about it. It is so easy to ask each other how they've been; no sincerity, no affections. Sometimes we don't even keep it touch because we think that if we wanted, we could always kakao them. Also, because of smartphones, meeting face to face has decreased because people think they can talk through kakao. I sometimes miss times of texting with those old phones, which don't show our pictures, don't let us know if messages are read. In fact, I'm thinking about changing my phone. Anyway, it was really nice hearing about your opinion because I totally agree with you!

    2. The life withou smart phones.. i think this life is hard to imagine. Sometimes I think "Smart"phones make us more stupid. Nowadays we even searh a little thing by googling it so we can get an information without contacting with someone. However, I experienced the good part of making a connection by smartphones. When i was in Canada for 4 months, i taught Korean to 6 little kids. Their parents had escaped from North Korea and their kids had been born in Canada or they had moved to Canada when they were babies. So they couldn't experience Korean or Korean culture, in other words, they were disconnected with Korea. Because of that their parents felt disconnection between them and their children. So, the church i went, they asked me to teach Korean language but it was hard to find Korean materials for 6 to 8 years old boys and girls and, at that time, the smart phone really helped me. I found an app that reads and provides Korean fairy tales. I continued the class with this app and most of them started to understand and laugh also, their parents started to talk with their kids freely. Since they were able to understand parents' Korean easily and they have a connection or common interest to talk aobut. By the smartphone, they are connected and the kids are connected to their home-country(I mean South Korea.) I understand your idea but there are some good part that can connect people in different ways.

I really agree with you. In fact, SNS is changing our lives as many people prefer socializing online. People engage the world through thoughts and views shared over SNS. Especially kakao talk has truly changed the way people communicate with each other. Some of my friends have hard time to deliver their expressions by writing because they are used to using emoticons such as kakao talk emoticons! There are advantagess but we must be recognized that there is a disadvantages also. To get away from your situation, some people invented phone stack game. I think it satirize social situations but it is quite good idea. It will get rid of some of absence of communication in reality and I hope you guys play the game and have a real conversation :)

    4. Ohhh I agree with you. I guess all of us agree with you to some extent. Well, while I was reading your writing, I felt a bit guilty because that might have been me that made you feel awkward. Or if it hadn't been me, I know that I have been that kind of person at least once. I always think I should focus on talking while I am with another person or other people, too. I think it's the time for us to control ourselves conciously because smartphone has come to our lives not noticing us. Also, not only for the communication part, I think we should reduce the time that we use smartphones. Well there are also many people who are okay but there are many people who use smartphones too much. While using smartphones we just get instant information which makes us make unable to think deeper. So I am trying now:)

In recent years scientists and engineers have allowed plants and animals to instruct them. They are studying and mimicking the design features of various creatures and it's a field known as biomimetics. They have tried to create new products and improve the performance of existing machines. For example, have you seen firefly? It can make light without heat and it is amazing. You can find its remarkable efficiency by comparing between the firefly and some bulbs we use. An incandescent lightbulb emits only 10 percent of its energy as light and the rest is basically wasted, discharged as heat. A fluorescent bulb performs much better, emitting 90 percent of its energy as light. But neither of these is a match for the firefly. With very few ultraviolet or infrared rays, the light emitted by this insect is nearly 100 percent energy efficient. The firefly’s secret lies in the chemical reactions of the substance luciferin, the enzyme luciferase, and oxygen. Special cells called photocytes use luciferase to trigger this process, with oxygen as fuel. The result is cold light—so named because it produces virtually no heat. Many scientists have researched to applicate this mechanism. They found luciferin can be used as a probe to mark cancer cell and cure it as well. Even more, if we use it instead of light in the future, we can save a lot of energy to produce electricity. we can anticipate a fluorescent roadside tree which make light of itself if we insert a luminous DNA to the tree DNA. Even we need further study, don’t you think it can be a quite good solution for energy problems? What do you think about to apply biomimetics into our daily life?

  18. yes. biomimetic application is really amazing. it can be used in physics, chemistry, and we can even use in computer science. it used a long time ago. for example, admiral Yi Sun-shin imitated turtle's shell, and made the gur buk sun(the turtle ship). Leonardo da Vinci also imitated birds a long time, and he made the ornithopter.(flying machine) in recent years, biomimetics is state of the art technology. scientists made smaller and better hard disk drive by imitating nano-size magnetic bacteria called magnetosome. biomimetics have a great potential and it's our responsibility.
