C4 Monday & Wednesday 5, 6 Class ***Adversity Assignment***

In Unit 3, we discussed in length about adversity.  According to www.dictionary.com,  adversity is defined as adverse or unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress.

Now describe how Koreans confront adversity.  On page 33 of your textbook, there are some ideas that some people might struggle with to overcome adversity.  What type of adversity faces many Koreans today? What are some steps taken to overcome it? That are the people's attitude toward this adversity? What can be learned from this specific adversity? Why?  Can you identify with the adversity you listed? Why or why not?

Please take some time to think about this question. Formulate your thoughts and write at least one paragraph outlining some or all of the points listed above.  Please make sure your name is visible somewhere on the post as I will be taking this as attendance and participation for Monday's class.

Good luck!

    Name: Kim Yu-na

Type of adversity: poor figure skating environment, injury

    Steps taken to overcome it:
The environment of figure skating was poor. There are 30 indoor ice-rinks in Korea, but there are no exclusive ice-rinks for figure skating. General people usually used ice-rinks, and skaters could rent it at night or dawn. Because of this poor environment, Kim Yu-na moved to Taereung, Anyang, Gwacheon, and Jamsil for traing.
Another adversity she had was her injury. Because of the hard training, she always had injuries; lumbar herniated intervertebral disc(2007), hip joint injury(2008), tarsalgia(2010), metatarsal injury(2013). When she had metatarsal injury, she absented two Grand Prix conference and focus on the Sochi Olympics. She overcame these injuries not only by the painkiller, but also by her willpower.

    The person’s attitude:
Even though Kim Yu-na had hard time because of the poor environment and her injuries, she did not lose her smile. She was easygoing, and this helped her to overcome her adversities. Also, her willpower for figure skating made her to success in her field.

What can be learned from this person’s experience?
While I was writing adversities and the way Kim Yu-na overcame these adversities, I found that she tried hard even when she was struggling with her injuries. If I were in her situation, I would have given up because of the pain. Kim Yu-na shows us that we can overcome adversities by trying hard with our strong will.

    Name: Otodake Hirotada

    Type of adversity:
Otodake was born without arms and legs, and only 10cm of those parts were grown throughout his life.

    Steps taken to overcome it:
Even if he had no arms and legs, he was not ashamed of his disabilities. Instead, he enjoyed running, swimming,
playing basketball and baseball throughout his school days. He also studied hard and accomplished to go to
"The Wasede university", which is one of the top-class college in Japan. He later made a campaign for disabled
people, which was called, "Breaking the wall between hearts". He was well known for his autobiography,
"No one's perfect", which he expressed what he felt throughout his life. His story touched the whole world and
became one of the famous bestsellers. He has also worked as a reporter in TBS and showed that disabled
person can accomplish anything he or she wants. He has recently worked as a teacher in elementary school,
and wrote an other book about his career in teaching.

    The person's attitude:
Otadake said that the disabilities are just a physical character of him. He does not think he is unfortunate
but unique. He does not mind what people say or think, and just like ordinary people, he fulfills every goal that
he dreams of. He believes that there are things that only him as a disabled person can do. So he thinks that by
making things happen himself, giving lectures, and writing books, he can encourage all the people around the
world who are suffering with hardship of life.

what can be learnt from this person's experience?
I read his autobiography several times when I was young, and I was so shocked of his disabilities. Almost
nobody could be able to live without arms and legs like him. Its so impressive that he did not give up on
his life and did all the thing that others can do and cannot do. Most of us aren't easily satisfied and tend
to think that we are the most unfortunate and unhappy ones. However, it can be learnt from Otodake that
even if I'm in a tragic situation, the positive way of confronting or fighting out the situation out can solve
anything. We all are sometimes too negative and anxious about our future, but we should be ashamed of
ourselves of not trying hard to make things happen like him. Also, from what he is doing recently, giving
lectures and righting books about his life story, we should learn to give help to people in need. He should be
respected for his mindful help for others and overcoming hardships of disabilities with magnificent effort.

    *Type of adversity: Poverty
*Person who faced adversity: My grandfather

My whole life have been influenced by my grandfather who achieved his dream despite of extreme poverty. I want to share his story because there is a good moral lesson for young adults in our age. He was born at the country named Yeosu where there was no infrastructure for education. Also, his family was extremely poor. School was so far that he had to walk one hour to get there. Even though he enjoyed school, he had to drop middle school because he had no money for tuition fee. Instead, he worked at a fabric factory to save money for school. He said he was always bitten by his boss because he looked away to see other students heading to school. He decided to become an important person. After saving money, he could finish high school and started to prepare for an entrance examination of university.

Since he was a baby, his mother always brought a clean water from a well which no one had used it yet at that day and prayed for his success. She had given this prayer every single dawn for thirty years. While he was studying for the test, he heard his mother praying for a god. He firmly resolved to be successful.

One day, he saw a group of people at the auditorium listening to a candidate in the local elections. After his speech, my grandfather found out that they forgot to turn off a mike so, he went up to a stage and started to give a speech about his faith. People were overwhelmed by it. He was very brave and talented. The candidate was moved by his speech too and asked my grandfather if he can help his election campaign. My grandfather accepted it and worked diligently. The candidate was impressed by his hard work and gave him a chance to attend DongGuk University. Therefore, he moved to Seoul attending university and working as a paperboy.

At Seoul, influenced by that candidate, he decided to become a member of the National Assembly. All his relatives’ gathered money and supported him. However, he didn’t even have a political party. No one would invite the person from nowhere who is poor with no power. Despite of his effort, people ignored stranger and he lost an election, but he got many votes for an independent. Even though there was no one to help him out, he didn’t gave up and stood for election again. He failed again.

Nothing left for him. All his relatives were disappointed and couldn’t afford the election anymore. However, nothing could stop him. He started to run a small noodle restaurant to save the money for the next election. Everyone laughed at him when they heard about his dream of becoming a senator. He thought that he needed a new, different strategy. So, he started to study English. He was 45 back then. He participated an English speech contest. He recorded a script read by an American and practiced it for thousands of times. Finally he won the contest and he was known to be good at English.

After the contest, he ran for an election again. During an election campaign, he memorized and listed every single islands of Yeosu. There are 365 islands at Yeosu. Also, he visited all the islands to introduce himself. Citizens remembered him and were moved by his passion. Finally, he won an election. With this spirit, he had won four straight elections and worked as a senator for sixteen years. He achieved his life-long dream.

At his autobiography named “Challenge for Dream, Tenacity, Wisdom, Talent and Relationship(꿈, 깡, 꾀, 끼, 끈에 도전하라)”, he talked about how people should be patient and run for one’s dream. To achieve one’s dream, they need tenacity to face the obstacles and wisdom to overcome it. Also, people should find their talent and use it appropriately. Plus, people would be in need of someone’s help, so never overlook the importance of human relationship. He always practiced to do these. That was how he achieved his goal. His attitude was very challenging and he never gave up.

I have heard his story since early years. I was very motivated by him. This is why I am working hard to follow the path of what my grandfather had done before. No one can be SOMEONE when the person tries hard and challenges himself/herself. I learned that the effort will never betray me. So, I tries to do my best in any situation. Following his spirit, I’m sure that I can achieve my own dream too.

Thank you for reading my grandfather’s story and hope you have something to learn from it. 

Finally, he got certified of professional engineer. These days I’m surprised about his indefatigability. I realized from him that disability or penury doesn’t matter, if there is a thing I want to learn. When I’d wanted to give up, I thought as I recalled him, ‘Is it really difficult? Or am I lazy?’

Actually, this type of adversity is not a big problem today. In my case, I could not feel the matter of money for education. However, most young people like me have decision making problem. I guess it’s come from abundance. It is my adversity these days. I already have a lot of things so that I’m afraid about selection. It could be choice of career, menu, order or anything. No matter what I should choose, it was disrupted by this problem.

    Type of adversity: sexual discrimination

About Korea’s sexual discrimination: In 2013, Korea’s gender wage gap is 36.6 which ranked number 1 in OECD countries. If man’s wage is 100, women’s wage is 65.4. On the other hand, OECD average wage gap is 15.454. Based on this calculation we can measure ‘Equal wage day’ it can let us know how much days women have to work if she want to earn man’s annual income. For example, German’s equal wage day is march 21th, and Spain’s equal wage day is February 21th. If Korean women wants to earn exact same money with men, she has to work until May’s 4th monday. In other words, she has to work a year and 5 month if she wants to catch up with men’s annual income. (http://www.oecd.org/gender/data/genderwagegap.htm)

The person’s attitude: Youngok wants to fix this gender wage gap, so she went into research and found ways to let people know. One way she let others know is by set up ‘Korea’s Equal pay day’ She suggest government to take action, and let Koreans know how much discrimination korean women face.

What can be learned from this person’s experience: We can learn how to fight against social discrimination. First you have to collect data. Collect facts about discrimination that could show how serious it is. Second, you have to gather people who agree with you. Then you have to make this problem as ‘issue’ so that government have to move.

In 1996, 11 years after the foundation, Apple took over NeXT and 2 years later, he was able to return as the CEO of Apple.
In 2004, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. According to the doctors, he would only live 3~6 months. Jobs was told to say goodbye to his family and organize things for his death. However, his cancer turned out to be curable and he lived 7 more years after his diagnosis.

    The person’s attitude:
After he was fired from Apple, he had a hard time accepting that he had been fired from the company he started. He was shocked and felt like his whole time he invested into creating the company was gone. However, he soon felt free to imagine and demonstrated his life’s most brilliant creativity. He was even glad that he had been fired.
He was extremely lucky that he could be cured of cancer. By this experience, he understood that time is limited and would never want to waste it again. His will to live saved him another 7 years before his death.

What can be learned from this person’s experience?
By Job’s experience, it could be learned that every cloud has a silver lining. Bad events could turn out to be a good factor, and good events could lead to bad ones as well. Even though one is in a bad situation, he should never lose faith in himself and try to move on with his life. Also, the thought of death would stimulate one to find what he really wants to do which, according to Jobs, is the most important thins in life.

    Name: Ludwig van Beethoven

Type of adversity: Hearing loss, deafness

    Steps taken to overcome it:
Around 1796, by the age of 26, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. He suffered from a severe form of tinnitus, a "ringing" in his ears that made it hard for him to hear music. After he became deaf, he started to observe the vibrations of piano. Beethovan noticed that he could not hear high notes when playing piano. To hear his own compositions, he sawed the legs off of his piano and placed the piano on the floor, and pressed his ear to the floor as well. He would then proceed to bang on the keys, to hear what he had written.

    The person's attitude:
He did not give up and realized that he had to face the truth and continue living his dream of composing music. Even Beethoven’s deafness was not enough to be an obstacle large enough to block his path of success.

What can be learned from this person's experience?
Beethoven saw his deafness as a challenge to be fought and overcome. His stubborn nature strengthened him and he came to terms with his deafness in a dynamic, constructive way to become world famous composer. In other word, We can learn that no matter how the hard situation, we have to have great will to overcome the adversity.

    Name: Hee-ah Lee

Type of adversity: having only four fingers (two in each hand), having no legs down the knees and slight brain disorder

    Steps taken to overcome it:
Hee-ah Lee  was born as a challenged person. To grow strength on her fingers, she started to play piano when she was six years old. Although it took months for her only to push the keys, Lee kept practicing. Even her brain was in danger to be damaged more if she memorizes songs longer than five minutes, but she tried to remember more. After those five years of struggle passed, she finally became able to play Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu. After she got the first prize in piano competition, Lee kept working on and earned more prizes for years. In 1997, she opened her first piano solo concert.

    The person’s attitude:
Even though her body kept torturing her, Hee-ah Lee never gave up. After Lee became a pianist, she donated for the people just like her.

What can be learned from this person’s experience?
If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. We can learn to see the problems more optimistic and have courage to overcome it.

    Name: Hellen Keller

Type of adversity: lost her eyesight, hearing and mute.

Steps taken to overcome it: Helen Keller was born with the ability to see and hear. At 19 months old, she contracted an illness described by doctors as "an acute congestion of the stomach and the brain". The illness left her both deaf and blind. Michael Anagnos, the school's director, asked 20-year-old former student Anne Sullivan, herself visually impaired, to become Keller's instructor. It was the beginning of a 49-year-long relationship during which Sullivan evolved into Keller's governess and eventually her companion. Anne Sullivan arrived at Keller's house in March 1887, and immediately began to teach Helen to communicate by spelling words into her hand. Keller was frustrated, at first, because she did not understand that every object had a word uniquely identifying it. Hellen was really bad girl but anne didn’t give up to teach her.

The person’s attitude: Even Hellen lost her eyesight and hearing, her memory and imagination was strongly good. She had many hard times but she kept trying. So Hellen could enter the University and graduated with great grade. A lot of people acclaimed for her. Hellen gave a big hope to all impaired people

What can be learned from this person’s experience: Hellen accepted her disaility and did not think disability is ashamed. She overcame it. Also she care about others even she is the person who need the care. We should overcome the inferiority complex and should be seen beautiful hearted like Hellen did. I learned from her the mind of do our best and do not give up. And we need to consider others and help them always whenever they need.

When Jisun was 23years old, the car that Jisun and her brother were in, was hit by a drunk driver.
The car was enveloped in huge flames and her brother got her out of the car.

At that time, she turned over the death by having over forty times of major operations.
Now, she became a famous person who instills hope around the world by writing about her story.
Moreover she had enrolled in a doctoral course in UCLA.
She never gave up her dream.

    [The person's attitude]
She tried to think positively. She said that when strangers look at her with the curious eyes, she always thinks that they stare at me because I'm a superstar. She didn't complain about her adversity, instead she thanked to what she earned by being in such situation.
She also believed in her dream strongly.

[What can be learned from this person's experience?]
First of all I learned that the willness can change the situation. If she didn't have that will and the adhesiveness, it might have been impossible for her to overcome all that huge disaster.
Secondly, it is important to become a strong person in hardship. Her mother also had hard time too but Jisun said her mom always smiled at her and said "it will be okay". Also Jisun only saw her mom crying only once.
She said that strongness of her mom helped Jisun to be strong and gave her brave enough to overcome her diversity.

    Name: Martin Luther King

Type of adversity: Racial discrimination(White & Black)

    Steps taken to overcome it:
King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Gerorgia. At that time in North America, white people discriminated the black. King was one of the victims too.
When King was a child, he became friends with a white body whose father owned a business near his family's home. But as they grew up to the age of 6, the two bodys had to attend different schools. As King was born as an African-American he had to attend a segregated school for his kind. Tragically, he lost his friend because the friend's father no longer wanted his son to play with King. This was the first discrimination that King ever experienced in his life while being a kid.
When King became a high school student in Booker T. Washington High school, he won the first prize in an oratorical contest sponsored by the Negro Elks Club in Dublin. But as he was returning home with his teacher the bus driver insisted that they should stand up so the white people could sit down. He knew that this was wrong but having heard from his teacher that if he refused it would be breaking the law, he complied. Later on his life, he described this 'catastrophic memory' as "the angriest I have ever been in my life".
King and many other civil rights activists founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference(SCLC). This organization was created to protect the black churches. He carried out his protests nonviolently. He led the SCLC untill his death.

    The person's attitude:
King was a preocupied man. He carried out his plans nonviolently and was able to achieve what he wanted ultimately. Although he was assassinated, he was the man who knew what he had to do.

What can be learned from this person's experience?
Never judge a book by it's cover would be the most appropriate idiom to explain the situation. We must never discriminate a person because of his/her appearance. The inner appearance is what makes us a human, not our outer looks.
