***A sample of a perfectly done reflection paper***

The Pianist: Man going through a holocaust.

Hanna Kim

Racism is a topic we do not often talk about. It’s a topic that is hard to approach and it is definitely not something we usually experience nowadays. So what is this racism exactly? It is discrimination among races. You call this an irony, human being discriminating against other human being, since we are all same humans. But it used to happen a lot in the past. When you look at the world history, you will be able to find many serious events or genocides including racism. Above all, I would like to talk about the holocaust.

You might not be so familiar with a word holocaust, but you would have easily heard of Nazis and Hitler. Holocaust is genocide of Jews, led by Adolf Hitler, who is known as most brutal dictator through all history. It is surely one of the most tragic events that occurred in history. Therefore many films, documents, and novels were made based on holocaust. I would like to talk about one of the films, “The Pianist”. “The Pianist”, as you might have noticed already at the title, is a movie containing a story about Jewish pianist suffering through a holocaust and it is based on a true story. This movie starts with a main character, Wladyslaw Szpilman, playing piano beautifully until a bomb suddenly hits them. With this explosion, runaway of Szpilman starts as well. Like all Jews at that time, he and his family were living in a ghetto, areas they were allowed to live, and had to put this patch proving that he is a Jew. As Nazism gets more worse, he and his family were forced to get on this train that take them to this camp called Auschwitz, which Jews were kept and killed by Nazi soldiers. When they were almost closed to getting on that train, he miraculously gets saved by someone who adored him for his play and he gets separated from his family, All alone, he starts a runaway for his life asking people for help. He faces many moment that almost led him to death during a runaway, but eventually he manage to survive and hides into his remains of what used to be buildings and houses. Suffering from starvation, loneliness, and fears, Szpilman hides in there, hopeless and devastated. He finds this can of food in the wreckage, tries to open it, but it slips and falls and stop in front of someone’s foot. That someone was a German general. They stare each other for a while then general asks him about what he was doing, and his job. Szpilman answers him that he was a pianist and general asks him to play piano. After the play, general, for some reason, doesn’t kill him and even brings him food constantly. Then eventually, Nazists get defeated, and all German soldiers get caught including that general who helped Szpilman. General asks for help, telling he had helped Jew named Szpilman but it gets ignored. Movie ends like the beginning, Szpilman playing piano. I think this movie is very well made, and it is one of the movies that I got strong impression. The music was very suitable, and the act of Adrien Brody was just perfect, showing every detail of emotions and feeling of Szpilman and image or atmosphere of the movie just showed exactly what it would be like at that time. I also liked how it showed little details how Jews got through that times by putting scenes like when they share one caramel into pieces, or how Szpilman hides through a runaway.

The first time that I watched this movie was when I was attending school in U.S. We were learning about holocaust in history class and this holocaust was most horrifying and shocking thing in my whole life. The pictures of piles bodies dumped in holes, films that were shows about Auschwitz, and stories I read from books like Anne’s Diary; all of them described that time Jews were discriminated so clearly that I just could not believe it really happened. I also couldn’t believe how human being can be so cruel to other human being. That was the only thought I had at that time. How cruel! But when I watched it for the second time after few years, I had a chance to think more deeply about racism. Why on earth did Adolf Hitler hate Jews so much? Was it because of, like some people suggest, the financial problems that Germany had to take care of after the war? I just couldn’t understand and neither will anybody. But one thing we can see from the movie, is that not all Nazis were driven to kill all Jews like Hitler; like that German general who took care of Szpilman. This holocaust might have started from this pure racism Adolf Hitler had but I think he had used this power of massive crowd. No one exactly know the reason why they were so better than Jews or why Germans had to hate Jews so much but they hated and discriminated against them anyway because others all do and they were told to. Thus, I suppose some of them might were just following other people out of mob psychology. Nowadays, there aren’t many racisms going on the surface, but it still exists in some places. Because I don’t have a right to force others to think the way I want them to, I can’t change their minds, but if there are people with racism in their minds, I just want to tell them that race can’t be a standard or a criteria to judge people. It is something no one can decide so no one should feel superior or inferior by races.

Second Writing Assignment

Second Writing Assignment
For your second writing assignment, you must post one main post and a minimum of four mini posts on the blog for your peers to comment.  It can be about anything related to Units 8-10.  The purpose of writing is to give each student the freedom to express his/her ideas and thoughts in a safer environment, which hopefully will give us the opportunity to learn from each other.

The main post should be a paragraph and should contain some of your own thoughts about a subject, which may even include some facts you have researched about the subject.  Your main post should have a position and should seek other’s opinion about your subject.  It is each student’s responsibility to maintain their own main post as other students comment on them.  If you neglect your main post, it will die, so you want to make sure to comment periodically to what other students have commented.

The four mini posts should be a response to another student’s post.  Support your ideas with facts and logical reasoning as to why you think the way you do instead of assuming the audience understands.  You may post more than four mini posts. Remember, you don’t necessarily have to have the answers or solutions to the post, but rather, can help to add to the question or help clarify the main post.  Just let your ideas flourish and see where it takes you.

Remember to be respectful even if the contents of the post are different from the opinions of our own.
Also, remember to write your name on each comment to receive proper credit.

The writing assignment will be graded on the following:
** Completion of all five posts—did the student complete 1 main post and 4 mini posts?
** Content—Were the comments well thought out with reason and logic? Do they add to the post rather than to take away from the main post?
Good luck!  I’m looking forward to reading all of your responses!

Midterm Examination

Speaking Practice Midterm Examination will be test your knowledge of the subject matter covered in Units 6-7 in Summit 2 textbook. Students will be mostly graded on fluency with emphasis on rhythm and intonation.  Am I able to understand your speech without looking at your mouth for movement?

1. One-on-one interview style questioning where series of questions related to the topics covered in Units 6-7 will be asked. You will need to answer intelligibly and with proper support (defense).

2. A group of you will be given a topic to discuss! You and your group must be engaged in discussion about the topic to show that you fully understand the topic discussed. You will need to be engaged in a conversation for 3-5 minutes. The discussion shouldn’t be scripted but rather engaging and stimulating, and answering questions the observer might have regarding your topic.

3. Dialogue. This can be done in groups of two or three students with a dialogue prepared in advance using 7 grammar and 7 vocabularies from Units 6-7. I do not want you to memorize the script because it will sound scripted and unnatural which will cause you to lose points in fluency however you may bring in a copy of your script to look at should you get lost. Please bring in a copy of the script with the grammar and vocabularies highlighted or underlined. You will also be graded on the correct usage of both grammar and vocabulary.

4. One-on-one exam question. You will be asked an open-ended question, similar to the discussion questions found in your textbook. You will have a minute to organize your thoughts and answer the question with defense. You might want to use time words like, first, second, last to organize your thoughts. You will be graded on your ability to defend your position as well as fluency, and organization.

5. Video. You can make a video.  Please come see me for more details.

If you have any questions, please come see me in person during class. Once you have decided on what you will do for your Final Examination, please come and advise me of your decision.

Remember, your Midterm Examination is worth 15% of your final grade so please prepare in advance and practice, practice, practice!

Here is an example of a funny chain story that we made in class

We were having a cruise tour all over the world.   Storm hit and cruise became wrecked.  And when I woke up, I was in Desert Island with an Abercrombie & Fitch model.  It was shocking. I thought there is no chance to be rescued but it was happy to be with a handsome guy.  In addition, there were some animals like snakes, scorpions, etc..  I was bitten by a poisonous snake and needed medicine.

When she was almost dead, the handsome guy found her and saved her life. Fortunately, her father was the owner of the Abercrombie & Fitch.  I owed him but when he was doing first aid, he swallowed some poison blood, and then he died.  When she was returning home, she heard that her father talked o someone.  She figured out that her father was the suspect of this accident.  After she heard about reason, she fell with her father into the cliff.

Week 15--EPals Global Collaboration Project Presentation

EPals—Global Collaboration Project

Thank you for participating in a pilot program with Epals this semester.  I know some of you had great success with your participants abroad while others have not but it’s alright.  Your group representing the country will do group presentation on the 15th week.  I would imagine it would only take one class time rather than a whole week as scheduled.

For your presentation, please reflect and share with the class what you have learned about the culture of your student. What especially were striking to you?  Whether you have linked with someone or not, I would like your presentations to include the answers to the following questions:
·         Culture and knowledge you’ve learned
·         Did you experience any culture shock? If so, what were they?
·         How did you feel about the experience of sharing cultures?
·         What did you learn from this EPal experience?
·         What did you learn from the writing styles of the e-mails? Was it too casual or too formal? What did you like or dislike about the writing style of your student?
·         What kinds of things could you infer from their writings that weren’t directly written in words?  For example, could you sense their self-esteem or their outlook on life from their e-mails? What else could you tell?
·         Where there anything that was predictable or shocking to you?

Please have your presentation organized and ready so that you’re not fumbling in front of the class on the day of presentation.  Your group can either have a PowerPoint presentation ready, video, or some other visual aid to help you with your presentation.   Remember to make eye contact when speaking to the group! Also, do not read from a piece of paper because that’ll surely put the audience to sleep!

Your EPals homework grade will look to see how much effort you have put into the project, how you problem solved, and other methods to resolve the problems some of you had.  For those of you who have made the contact, I will look to see how you interacted to get the information that you did.  Lastly, remember to add proof or evidence of contacts made, either printed or in other visual forms.  Remember, this is worth 15% of your total grade so please plan ahead for your presentation.

Thank you!!!

These days, I've been feeling very blessed and thankful to have all of you in my class!  I’m honored and privileged to be teaching all of you this semester.  For that, I thank you!  There are days when I feel like you guys are my family, listening to my stories and trying to help whenever you can.  At times living in Korea can be difficult being far away from friends and family, but there are many days where I look forward to coming to class, and seeing some of you. Being with you guys just makes my day and my life that much happier.  I appreciate all the challenges and discussions that encourage me to learn, especially about Korean culture and customs. I’ve been teaching at Gachon University for several years now and I can say that this semester by far is the best semester I’ve ever had!  Thanks again for a great semester! Hang in there, it’s week 12!

Any salt water aquarists or know of someone who is?

Are there any biology majors or natural science majors who have access to some phytoplanktons in the lab or from a pond somewhere? Here's my semi-emergency situation!  My clown fish finally laid fertilized eggs yesterday (Monday) so I need to prepare live food for the fish fry (babies) or they will all die!

I need rotifer 로티펴 (phytoplankton) cultures to grow them to feed to the babies when they're born.  It needs to be small enough for the baby fish to eat (50-1000 µm). And the babies won't eat dead fish food like the adults.

I imagine that most of you will have no or little experience with breeding salt water fish but I thought I would post on here because you may know of someone who does.

Any help would be appreciated!

Here's a link for what the rotifer might look like:

Under what circumstances would you lie, or cheat, and what effect does your deception have on society at large?

Take a look at this video we watched during class. Yes, the speaker talks fast but if you have the time, try to listen to him again and hear what he has to say.  How is human motivation and behavior linked to cheating and lying? What kind of society would you like to have your children grow up in? Is there anything we can do?

First Writing Assignment Help!

Writing Assignment #1

Topic: What is the subject of your paper? What is the paper about?

Thesis statement: What is your position or point of your paper on the topic?

Remember, each paragraph should have a topic sentence, or a major detail, that supports your thesis. Each topic sentence should be supported with many minor details (specific details and examples) to support your topic sentence.

I would like for you to use a five-paragraph essay format for this paper.  You essay should include an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Remember to use those transitions to help guide your ideas into sentences as well as to guide you from paragraphs to paragraphs.

A paragraph looks like this:

In a paragraph all the sentences must follow each other.  Each sentence begins on the same line as the sentence before it.  When you are writing a list of sentences, you write each new sentence on a new line.  Sentences in a paragraph do not start on new lines.  This sentence started on the same line as the last sentence.  This is an important rule for paragraph writing.

A paragraph does NOT look like this:

In a paragraph all the sentences must follow each other.

Each sentence begins on the same line as the sentence before it.

When you are writing a list of sentences, you write each new sentence on a new line.

Sentences in a paragraph do not start on new lines.

This sentence started on the same line as the last sentence.

This is an important rule for paragraph writing.

Cosmetic Trends in Korea...is it out of control?

Here's a recent essay a student wrote on prevalence of cosmetic surgeries in Korea which I thought I should bring to your attention.  Try to follow her argument and see if what she says is valid or invalid. Are people having plastic surgeries because they have a low self-esteem? Because you're not happy with who you are? These are some questions you should ask yourself before going under the knife for your double eyelid surgery. Who are you trying to look like? Why?

I find nothing more sexier in Korean men with their single eyelids!  A middle-aged man with a single eyelids speaks sophistication, like he's deep in thought. Oh my goodness, I never thought I'd be talking about eyelids like the way I am right now! hehe

Cosmetic Surgery Trend

Korea is called the empire of cosmetic surgery. Many people are willing to do cosmetic surgery for the purpose of beauty, and it is even becoming one of the “graduation presents.” It is natural that people want a beautiful appearance and want to overcome their appearance complex, but the trend of cosmetic surgery is getting worse in Korea. People are so imprudent to have the surgery without thinking why they really want to do it. Some people even think that cosmetic surgery will change their whole lives and dream of turning their lives around. This kind of blind faith in cosmetic surgery may come from the appearance-oriented Korean society, the effect of mass media, or a westernized standard of beauty. There might be other reasons behind people’s faith in cosmetic surgery’s ability to create beauty, but the one certain thing is cosmetic surgery is not the only option to choose.

According to the survey by Trend Monitor, one in five women in Seoul have surgery, and we have to notice why especially Koreans are crazy about cosmetic surgery. The first reason might be related to the characteristics of Korea. Korea is one of the appearance-oriented societies. That means appearance is competitive, and people cannot ignore the importance of looks. Other countries might show this trend too, but the degree of obsession with appearance is too much in Korea. Many Koreans suffer from an inferiority complex and feel compelled to be beautiful. This obsession with cosmetic surgery is sometimes seen as an indicator of poor-esteem. Koreans’ view of cosmetic surgery, such as “it’s not such a big deal anymore,” can be very dangerous.

Since the opening of the twentieth century, as mass media started to develop, media naturally started to affect people’s lives in various ways. We can say that the effect of mass media is the second reason for Korean’s craze of cosmetic surgery. The media shows many celebrities who have good appearances, and people naturally think that their appearance is the standard of beauty. This makes people follow them and have the surgery. Psychologists say that media can affect people’s body esteem “by becoming a reference point against which unfavourable body shape comparisons are made.” This shows that people might use images projected by the media as standards for comparison. It is so natural that people who are exposed to media’s standard form a stereotype of beauty. That is to say, media makes people form an ideal of standardized beauty and makes them think that it is the only beauty, so they can justify themselves to have the surgery.

This bad influence of mass media might form a westernized standard of beauty because celebrities who have the western look appear in the media and make people think that their look is the standard of beauty. This is the third reason of Koreans’ cosmetic surgery trend. Now, many Koreans consider big eyes, a prominent nose, white skin and a small face as components of beauty, and the combination of these components clearly show the western look. It is totally different from Korean traditional beauty. In Korea, the most common type of surgery is double-eyelid surgery, which creates an upper eyelid with a crease from an eyelid that is naturally without a crease. Not only does this surgery explain the inferiority complex of traditional Asians’ eyes, but also proves the desires to have big eyes like western people. The selection criteria of Miss Korea is another example of a westernized standard of beauty. There is no definite criteria for Miss Korea’s appearance, but the elected Miss Korea shows that big eyes, a prominent nose and white skin is the standard of beauty. It is a clear contradiction that Miss Korea, who represents Korean traditional beauty, has to resemble western beauty. However, every culture has their own ways of pursuing standardized beauty like “Chinese women’s bound lotus feet, Padaung women’s elongated necks and western women’s constricted waists.” It implys that other cultures also have standards of beauty and want to follow them. It is a sad reality because this shows Koreans are not the only people who lack confidence in their appearance and their identity.

These three factors show why Koreans are becoming crazy about cosmetic surgery. There might be other various reasons other than the characteristics of appearance-oriented Korean society, effect of mass media, or westernized standard of beauty. However, whatever the reason is, having surgery without a clear reason is definitely a wrong choice and will result in a lifetime of regret. Some might still argue that they have surgery to overcome their appearance complex and gain confidence, but that is just an excuse because it is quite clear that surgery is not the only way to get over the complex. Cosmetic surgery cannot change the person by itself; it just gives a little bit of change in a person’s appearance. That means inner change is the only way to overcome one’s complex and way more important than outward appearance change. It is not just a truism, but it is true. People just deny this truth because they don’t have that much confidence to change their inner self. However, the real and right way to get over the complex is the change of one’s own mind, and this way will be the first step to change Korean society.

Beyond Gangnam Style...what do you think?

See how Gangnam City officials decided to deal with all the illegally set up food vendors at Gangnam Station. What do you think? Is this kind of force ever justified? Something to chew on and think about!
